I stepped out of the truck and handed the keys to valet with a tip before helping her out. I grabbed her close as we walked into the VIP area. I could see her taking in the scene, the luxury, the well-dressed crowd, the energy that came with being in elite spaces. Her eyes were wide, but she carried herself with natural confidence, like she belonged here. Because she did.

“Dr. Holloway!” Davinci’s voice boomed across the corridor. He jogged over, still in his warm-up gear, that million-dollar smile on full display. “Man, good to see you!”

“Davinci, what’s good, brother? What we know?” I dapped him up.

“We know we got this.”

“Fa sho,” I turned to Sametra and kissed her hand, “This is my girlfriend, Sametra. Sametra, meet the man himself.”

“Wow, it’s so nice to meet you,” she said, extending her hand, but he pulled her into a quick hug.

“Nah, we family now. Any woman who got this man smiling like this is good people. Call me Dee.” He grinned at me. “Doc, you didn’t tell me she was this beautiful. You better lock this down quick. My homies back there eyeing her.”

“Don’t get them niggas hurt,” I said, wrapping my arm around her waist.

“Heard that,” he said, laughing. “Y’all enjoy the game. I’mma put on a show for you tonight.”

The usher led us to our seats, and I watched Sametra’s face as she realized just how close we were to the action. We were literally right on the court, close enough to hear the players talking, close enough to see every bead of sweat.

“Oh my God,” she whispered, settling into her seat. “This is unreal.”

We ordered drinks, and she had to have some popcorn. Sametra took pictures of us and herself. We did look good together.

The Pinnacles were playing their biggest rivals, and the energy in the arena was insane. Sametra was on her feet cheering, completely caught up in the atmosphere. The drink she ordered had her feeling good, loose, and completely herself. She wasn’t worried about being cute, or prissy.

During a timeout in the third quarter, the kiss cam started making its rounds on the Jumbotron. I watched it bounce from couple to couple, getting closer to our section.

“Baby,” I said, nudging her.

“What?” she looked up at me, then followed my gaze to the big screen.

There we were, in high definition, for the entire arena to see. The crowd erupted when they realized it was D’s VIP guests on camera.

“Oh my God, we’re on TV!” she squealed, but I was already leaning in. She leaned into me. The kiss was soft at first, then deeper as the crowd went wild. When we broke apart, she was blushing hard, but laughing.

“I can’t believe that just happened,” she said, burying her face in my chest. I wrapped my arms around her, and she leaned her head on my shoulder. The kiss cam moved on, but people around us were still clapping and cheering. I could feel her heart racing against me.

“You okay?” I asked, rubbing her back.

“More than okay,” she said, pulling back to look at me. “That was amazing. I feel like I’m in a movie or something.”

We held hands for the rest of the game, and I barely watched the action on the court. I was too busy watching her, the way shecheered, how she asked me questions about plays, the pure joy on her face. This woman deserved to feel this special every single day.

The home team won by twenty, and Dee had definitely put on a show like he promised. As the crowd dispersed, I took her hand.

“Ready for part two?”

“There’s more?”

“We got dinner reservations at Meridian.”

Her eyes widened. “The place that’s booked six months out?”

“Connections, baby. Connections.”

Twenty minutes later, we were seated at the best table in the house, champagne flowing, her telling me about every play like I hadn’t been sitting right next to her. Meridian was an upscale seafood restaurant. It was fairly new and getting into it was a task in itself, but again, if my baby wanted it, she would have it, and she’d been dying to get here to try the lobster bisque and stuffed crab cakes.

“I still can’t believe Davinci Bryns knows my name now,” she said, taking another sip of champagne. “Wait until I tell Halo and Winnie. Especially Halo.”
