As they sat, letting the stylists work their magic, Lucy noticed him — one of the Black Doves.
He stood near the entrance, watching. Unlike the others who blended into the background, he didn’t bother hiding his presence. Tall, with jet-black hair, pale skin, and piercing grey eyes, he carried himself with an authority that didn’t match his youth. And he knew she had noticed him.
Their eyes met in the mirror, just for a second.
A shiver ran down Lucy’s spine — not from fear, but from something else. Something she couldn’t quite place.
She turned her attention back to her reflection, heartbeat steady but mind racing.
Who was he? And why did he feel… different?
Two hours later, they stepped out of the salon looking like they had just walked off the pages of a magazine.
“This feels weird,” Corey muttered, adjusting his cuffs.
Lucy smirked. “You’ll get used to it.”
Just then, her stomach growled.
“I need food before we take back my business.”
Corey sighed but nodded. “Fine. But no more shopping after this.”
With that, they headed to a nearby restaurant, ready to fuel up before the real battle began. The Black Doves followed at a distance, ever watchful.
But out of the corner of her eye, Lucy saw him again. Staring intently at her.

Chapter 11
The car glided through the city. The closer they got, the heavier the air felt.
As they turned the final corner and the towering glass skyscraper came into view, something shifted in Lucy’s chest.
The sleek, silver lettering at the top gleamed in the morning sun: THE MORGAN GROUP.
It was a name she was born into. A name she had every right to reclaim.
But the second the car pulled up to the private entrance and the door opened, it hit her.
The smell of the stone, the scent of fresh polish, the low hum of the lobby beyond — it all hit her like a freight train.
She froze.
Her foot hovered above the curb.
She blinked, trying to steady her breath, but it was no use.
Memories came crashing down, uninvited.
Her father laughing with her as they walked in holding hands.
Her mother, scolding him for spoiling her with another new dress. Her brothers racing each other up the front steps.
Innocent, golden days that turned to ash.
Lucy stumbled back and without thinking, slid back into the car, slamming the door shut behind her.
