Demond reached overand grabbed what he needed from the glove compartment. “Here you go sir. May I ask why I got pulled over?”
The cop stareddown at his license and look back in his face. “You have a busted taillight.” He said. “I’ll be right back.” He walked away.
I lookedat him in disbelief. “Nigga this a motherfucking $200,000 dollar car, how the fuck he talkin’ about a taillight? I know what the problem is, he see two young niggas livin’ life and it’s a problem. Fuck outta here.”
“Meek, just chill the fuck out.”He said again.
All I could thinkabout was the guns on the floor behind us and I prayed like hell he didn’t have any dope in this bitch. The officer came back and asked up to get out the car. He made me give him my license as well.
“What’s all this for?”I asked him standing to the side as he called another unit in. I had my phone in my hand the entire time.
“Arethere any weapons in the car?” He asked.
Demond shook his head.“Yes sir, under the seat but they’re registered and clean.” He told him speaking like a white boy.
The officer waiteduntil the other unit pulled up before he checked the car. Now here it is I’m looking at the taillights and both of those shits were just fine. I always tried to avoid this shit. I saw this shit on the news every day, that’s why I always prayed when I left the house.
“We didn’t do shit.”I told him. “I thought he said the light was out?” I said to Demond.
He lookedat me and shook his head. “Don’t even say shit nigga, we just trying to make it up outta this bitch alive.”
“You got something to say nigger?”The cop asked flashing his light on us again.
“No sir.”Demond said with anger on his face. It was too late for this shit; all we wanted to do was get in the house we weren’t fucking with nobody.
I knewthe car was legit and the titles were clean. The guns were registered, and we didn’t have any fucking warrants at all. Both licenses were valid. All he had to do was let us go. I knew his racist ass needed something to do.
His white femalepartner was cool though. She looked at us and winked her eye. “We’ll have you boys out of here shortly.” She walked to her partner and said something to him that only they could hear. This motherfucker was really searching the car for more than just guns. He didn’t even ask for permission or give us a reason as to why he was doing that shit in the first place.
Since it wasthe wee hours of the morning and people were getting up and, on the road, preparing for work, a good citizen heading to work stopped when he saw the commotion and hopped out of his car. He was older with a head full of gray hairs. His uniform said he worked at a tire shop somewhere. His skin was the same color as ours, but he was here for us.
“Lookslike you boys are in a bind.” He said standing off to the side next to us.
The male coplooked up and tried to get him away from us. “Who are you? Is there a reason why you’re here?” He asked walking behind the trunk of the car.
The man stood right thereand stood his ground. “Sandra Bland, Mike Brown, Freddie Gray, Philando Castile, Alton Sterling.” He called their names. “Must I go on sir? I’ve had just about enough of it, so since my color matters, I’m going to stand right here with these boys to make sure they leave here safe and live to see their families tomorrow.”
I couldn’t fucking believeit! I wanted to run and hug this man. This was the first time EVER that I witnessed this kind of shit. The officer looked like he was pissed with the man for sticking a fork in his shit. He continued on and found nothing at all. The only thing he could come up with was some shit about the tag and it not being registered so he had to have the car towed. We both knew it was some bullshit but we’d rather the car get towed and still breathe to see another day. It didn’t make no sense how the cops had niggas shook. Even when you did right, theystill found something wrong. Not all cops were bad cops, but it sucked that they had to suffer for their colleagues’ mishaps.
The man stayedwith us through the entire ordeal. He even took our guns and shit and said we had to come down to the station and get them, which was bullshit. When the car was towed and the officers were gone, the man introduced himself. “I’m Michael.” He said shaking each of our hands. “You boys need a lift anywhere?” He asked.
I shook his hand first.“Thanks, my man, we really appreciate what you did out here.” I told him genuinely thankful. It was good to know it was still some good people out here.
“No problem at all.”He said.
Demond shookhis hand and thanked him next. “Looks like you were headed to work; go ahead and get there. We appreciate everything, we got it from here.”
He handedus both a card to his tire shop and went on about his business. “How the fuck we gonna get to your house now?” I asked.
“Man,I don’t fucking know but the sun will be up in a minute.” Demond said checking the time. “Mya ass isn’t gonna come.”
“And Kisha is probablydead to the world or still mad, so I know she’s not coming.” I let him know.
“I’ll call Brittany, she’s always up all night shit she’ll come.”
I shookmy head and pulled out my phone. “Nah, I’ll try my luck with Kish.” I pulled my phone out and called her ass like five times and each time it went to the voicemail. “Shit.”
“Just like I thought.”He chuckled. “I text Brittany and she’s on the way.”
