“You don’t haveto sing happy birthday to me, but I still want to make a wish.” I smiled and closed my eyes. ‘Lord, if you’re listening, please come save me.’ I opened my eyes, and Meek was just staring at me with his chinky dark eyes.
“I hopeyou wished for better days, Kish, shit we all need them.” He said.
I hada plastic fork in my drawer, so I used it to cut us two slices to eat before we fell asleep. When I woke up in the morning, Meek was gone, and someone was knocking at the door. Reluctantly I wrapped the sheet around me and walked to the door. I looked over at my mama who was still passed out in the same spot on the couch and frowned.
“Who is it?”I asked.
“Child Protective Services.May we come in and have a word with you?” The female asked.
I openedthe door with no problem. One look at my body and face along with my mama on the couch in the condition that she was in, was enough to conclude their investigation. All it took was an hour before she was being hauled off in handcuffs for child neglect and endangerment, while I was being walked out to a different car going to an unknown place.
Word spreadaround the projects quick as everyone stood around gossiping about it. Meek came running through the crowd to find out what happened. “Kish! Slow up!” He yelled. I looked up and asked if I could speak with him briefly. The caseworker told me ‘yes’.
“You leaving?”He asked worried. “Where they taking you?”
“I don’t know Meek, but anywhere besides here. I have an aunt who lives up in Fort. Lauderdale, hopefully she’ll come for me.” I said with a lot of hope behind it. I knew that God answered prayers, but I didn’t know it would happen like this.
“Damn.”He said looking sad. He knew I didn’t have a phone, so he scribbled his number on a piece of paper and stuffed it in my front pocket. “Make sure you keep in touch with me Kish, I mean that shit.” He kissed my bruised cheek.
“I will.”I said managing to smile. “Take care of yourself Meek, and thanks for everything.”
I was hauledoff to a group home for girls where I’d patiently wait to see if anyone wanted my ass, and you know what? I was absolutely okay with that. Being there was one of the most embarrassing moments of my life because when I left the projects, my bed bugs came with me. It took for my counselor to put in a lot of work getting rid of them and I was grateful for that. I was there for a full week dealing with bullshit from a bunch of mean, rude, and all out evil ass bitches, all except for one. Her name was Mya, and she was the same age as me with a beautiful spirit. We clicked immediately but after my first week, my father came for me.
I hadn’t seenthis man since I was five years old although he looked the same. My father was a mixture of Haitian and white. That’s where I got my skin, hair, and eyes his good genes, damn sure not my mama’s. I didn’t even want to go with him, but if I wanted to leave that group home then I had no choice. I said mygood-byes as the summer came to an end before making sure I exchanged numbers with Mya.
She wipedtears from her eyes. “I know I haven’t known you that long, but I’m gonna miss you girl.”
“I’m goingto miss you too, I promise I’ll call you.”
“You better.”She smiled.
I walkedout to the car ready to get on with my new life, the summer was over, and it was definitely one of the hottest and worst summers ever.
THOUGHTS FROM MEEK
Iwaited for a whole month for Kisha to call me, I worried about her ass every day since the day she left. I even found myself fucking Rags up for going around bragging about how Kisha used to suck him off for some dough. Bitch ass nigga couldn’t wait to find out she wasn’t coming back so he could spread the word like that made him the man or something. I had to cut Dreka’s ass off after she pulled that shit jumping on Kisha; had I been there, it would’ve never happened. I was now living in my own apartment in the same projects. I was working at a little soul food spot inside of the gas station on 22ndAvenue and worked out something with the landlord as far as my rent. I was about to find a way to come up and I wished I could’ve brought Kisha with me, but after a whole six months went by without hearing from her, I figured she forgot all about me. I understood, that was life, so I did the only thing I could, prayed for her and move on without her.
I can’t fixyour pain Kisha, I apologize-Meek
CHAPTER 1
Whoever the fuck said that living with my father was a better idea told a lie like a motherfucker. I could’ve stayed at the group home for the shit I was dealing with. First of all, his wife was suffering from the final stages of breast cancer and was in the hospital most of the time. He was raising her kids, two boys and a girl. Brittany was 17 like me, and real snobbish sometimes making me want to fuck her up. She was pretty and all that, but she didn’t have to constantly walk around acting like she was the shit. We got along when she felt like it, but she didn’t hang out with me much.
Trent and Clint, the boys were twins and fine as hell but like night and day. Trent was the nice one; we always got along and did everything together. Clint on the other hand was mean as hell with a dark side. They both were dark skin with hazel eyes and rocked low cuts with deep waves. They had the perfect bodies with the matching set of pretty ass teeth, which was rare. My father worked so much at the hospital that I hardly ever seen his ass and on top of that he didn’t live in the best neighborhood either. I mean it wasn’t the projects, but it was still the hood.
He barely even talked tome, or any of us for that matter like he was in a deep depression or something. He worked and paid the bills, other than that we were on our own. The only other great thing that he did was gave me the check that the state was paying him to help out with me. We had all the freedom we wanted and fended for ourselves. I had to switch my school and was now attending Central. I sat in my room and put my headphones on until I finished my homework for the night when Brittany came walking in the room that we shared together. She tossed her book bag down on the bed and stood next to me. I looked up at her wondering what the fuck could she possibly want; I wasn’t in the mood today. I closed my notebook and stared at her.
“What’s up?”I asked with a get to the point already look on my face.
“It’sa party tonight and I want you to go.” She said. “I’m not asking you either, I’m telling you. So let me hook you up so you could have some fun, aren’t you tired of being a plane Jane looking like you still live in the projects?”
I looked downat my clothes and shrugged my shoulders; it wasn’t shit wrong with my uniform and my usual ponytail. Brittany was persistent with everything, and I learned that, so instead of arguing with her ass, I let her wash my hair, blow it out, flat iron it and wax my eyebrows. When it was all said and done, she stood me in front of the mirror so I could take a look, and the first thing that came to my mind was the speech that Meek gave me long ago about how pretty I was, and he was right. I couldn’t stop the tears that formed in my eyes. I missed Meek and I hoped he was okay; I lost his number while I was in thegroup home because my pants got misplaced so I couldn’t even call him.
“See.”Brittany said. “You’re pretty as hell girl, I don’t know why you walk around looking the way you be looking.” She went into her hygiene kit and pulled out a tube of Veet hair remover, a razor, and some Vaseline. “Now, obviously your mama ain’t teach you shit about carrying yourself like a lady, so I’ll show you since I’m tired of looking at your hairy legs and plane nails.” She then reached into her polish bag grabbing all kinds of colors.
I rolled my eyes.“Don’t bring up my mother.” I warned her, that bitch was off limits. I never wanted to think about her again even though she tried to reach out to me.
“I’m just saying,it’s true.”
