She lookedat me with her chinky eyes. She was pretty as hell, she just looked like she had it rough. “Are you serious? Oh my God, ‘thank you’.” She said snatching the money from my hand. “Here you go.” She passed it to the cashier.

“You welcome.”I told her. It was sad that we were all young and the products of the hood in some kind of way. She grabbed the change and got ready to walk out still freezing. I grabbed my bag and walked out behind her. “Hold up!” I said pulling off my sheepskin, I didn’t want to, but I did it anyway and gave it to her. “Here.” I passed her the jacket.

Her eyes lit up.“For me? You really don’t have to. Look at this coat, I’d never let anybody wear this. I wouldn’t even want anybody to look at it.” She laughed but that didn’t stop her from putting it on.

“Where you headed to?”I asked her. “You walking? It’s cold as shit out here, you shouldn’t be walking.” The crisp morning air wasn’t playing any games.

“Yeah,I’m going to the bus stop so I can get to Wynwood.” She said.

“Shit, you a long way from there but I’ll take you.” I offered. I really didn’t want shit from it, I just wanted to help my peoples.

Her frown causeda slight wrinkle on her nose. “But you don’t even know me.”

“That’scool and you didn’t know me either but that didn’t stop you from taking my money, right?” I was trying to be nice but if she kept coming with the dumb shit then I was up out this bitch.

She giggled.“You’re right but I’m okay I don’t need a ride. I’ll manage.”

“Well, what’s your name?”I asked her.

She extendedher hand to shake mine. “I’m Mya. What’s yours?”

I shookher freezing hand back. “Mya, I’m Meek.” I said.

“Meek?”She frowned and scratched her head. “That sounds so familiar.”

“I doubt you know me.”I told her.

“True, but I know that name. I had a friend once upon a time who always talked about Meek from the Scott Projects.” She waved it off. “I could be wrong though, that was a while ago in the group home.”

“Group home?”I asked. “What was her name?”

“Her name was Kisha.”

I smiled.“Yep, sounds about right. I’m the famous Meek.”

Her eyes stretched.“Are you really? Damn this is a small world. Fuck! I wish I had her number to call her, do you know she’s been looking for you?” She asked in disbelief. “Why didn’t you ever come looking for her Meek? She’s been through some stuff, and she needed you. She used to always listen to that Mariah Carey song ‘Don’t Forget About Us’ and it drove me crazy.” She laughed.

That warmeda nigga’s heart to know that she never stopped thinking about me. “Well, I guess you’ll be glad to know that Kisha is actually with me right now. She’s at my house and I don’t plan on losing contact again.”

“She is?!”She blurted. “Yo, this is amazing. I need to talk to her, I don’t have a phone right now, but can you give me a number for her?” She asked.

“Runin the store to get a pen.” I told her.

She tookoff and came back with a pen and a small piece of paper. I took it from her and scribbled down the number she could call which was the house phone. I watched her stuff it in the jacket pocket and wondered how old she was.

“How old are you Mya?”

“I’m eighteen, how old are you?” She asked.

“Twenty.”I told her. “At least let me give you a ride to the bus stop.”

“Thanks.”She smiled. “Cause its way too cold to walk.”

I unlockedthe truck and hopped in letting the engine roar a little before pulling off. Mya still looked cold as she snuggled into the jacket rubbing both her hands together, so I turned the heat on and drove her to the bus stop. When we arrived, she unlocked the door and looked at me. “Here’s your coat.” She went to remove it. “Thank you for everything.”

I shook my head.“Nah, you keep it. Who are you staying with?” I wondered. I could tell that she didn’t have much and was struggling.

She shrugged her shoulders.“Just some guy that I met. I’ve been living with different guys since I left that group home ya know? I just need stability while I get it together. Those homes don’t teach us shit about the world, they just throw us to the wolves to figure it out so that’s what I’m doing.”
