Once I’ve pulled out the food and set silverware and plates on the table, I head back into the living room to grab my phone. My eyes catch on the wrapped box and anger flares.

Dani didn’t ask about it, but we will be having another conversation about that over dinner. Just like I would like to have another conversation about her friend, Gary.

I sneer at the thought of the man who is obsessed with my best friend. She doesn’t seem to see it, but I do. He might have agreed to be just friends with her, but he doesn’t look at her like a friend, that’s for damn sure.

He’s attractive enough, I guess, but he’s not hot enough to overlook the level ten creep factor he has going on. I’ve slept with more than a few men and women who have had red flags for days, but I wouldn’t touch Gary with a fifty-foot pole.

“Is the food here?”

Dani breezes into the room, her peach-scented body wash and shampoo wafting toward me as I turn around to face her. I bite my lip when I find her standing there in a pair of teeny tiny shorts and a white crop top that her wet blonde hair is making practically see-through and easily revealing she isn’t wearing a bra.

She’s so fucking sexy.

“Maya?” she asks, a smirk on her lips.

I blink, shaking my head as I meet her eyes. “You’re such a fucking tease.”

“But is it teasing when you’re going to get laid at the end of the night?”

I flip her off before grabbing the box off the table and tossing it toward her. “Your secret admirer strikes again. This is getting out of control, Dani. They know where you live now.”

“They might know the building, but they don’t know which apartment.” Dani waves off my words as she tosses the box back onto the table without opening it and heads for the kitchen. “Come on. Let’s eat. I’m starving.”

I bite back a frustrated growl as I follow her. “Dani, I think you need to go to the police. You could have a stalker. What if it’s someone who hunted you down from Behind the Lens?”

“And what if it’s some innocent person who I met at school?” Dani shakes her head as she plops into a chair. “I’m not going to the police because someone is leaving me gifts. It’s not like they’re threatening me.”

“But they know where you live—”

Dani shakes her head again. “No, Maya. We’re not doing this. I moved into this building because of the security. No one who isn’t my friend knows what apartment I live in. We have around-the-clock security. Even if this person has nefarious purposes, they can’t get to me here.”

“But they can get to you somewhere else,” I argue, but I can already see that she’s shut down. Sighing, I lower myself into the chair beside her. “Okay, I’ll drop it. I’m sorry. I just worry about you.”

Her face softens. “I know you do. Now, let’s eat. You clearly need to get laid, and I need some food in me so I’ll have enough energy to make you come until you forget about whatever has you so damn grumpy.”

“Well, I’ll never turn down orgasms.” The smile I send her way is forced, but I don’t think she notices as she doles out food to both our plates.

Dani is entirely too trusting, having grown up in an idyllic small town with a loving mom. Sure, they didn’t have anymoney, but at least she was loved. Her mom and stepdad even know she’s a cam girl, and they support her decision. I mean, in what world do parents support the fact that their child has sex online for money?

That’s one hundred percent my jealousy talking right there. My parents would’ve called me a whore if they knew what I was doing—if they were still alive, that is.

Hell, my dad called me a whore for being a burlesque dancer. I can only imagine the poison that would spew from his lips if he knew I was having sex on the internet.

Thankfully, I’ll never have to know.

At twenty-eight, I’m four years older than Dani and much more jaded. I feel like it’s my responsibility to counteract her…I don’t want to call it naivety, because she’s not naïve. Her optimism? Her belief that most people are good?

“I finished my last assignment,” Dani says excitedly, pulling me from my thoughts. “Only two more classes, and I’ll be finished.”

“That’s amazing, babe.” This time, my smile is genuine.

We fall into easy conversation, catching up on what’s been going on over the last few days since we’ve both been busy, while we devour dinner.

A few hours later, we’re watching a movie on the couch when Dani’s hand finds its way under my shirt.

“And what do you think you’re doing?” I ask her with an amused look over my shoulder.

I’m sitting between her legs since she wanted to cuddle. That should’ve been my first hint at what she actually wanted to do.
