Seconds passed.
Chase’s grey wolf barked.
Tyler bared his teeth, but instead of following through on the threat, he retreated.
The second Coastal shifter backed away, but not before throwing his own menacing glare my way.
I was officially on the Coastal Pack’s shit list.
The three of us watched their retreat until we could no longer see or hear the cowardly wolves.
A snout bumped my side. I met the black shifter’s pointed stare. He looked angry with me, but I couldn’t imagine why.
What?I tilted my head in question.
Black ears twitched, hinting at annoyance. His disapproval shifted to his partner.
The grey wolf lifted his snout. His head swung from his packmate to me in confusion.
The pair were obviously communicating, but there was no way for me to know what they were saying while in wolf form. It would be easy to shift into skins and demand an explanation, but doing so would result in my disqualification. I would have to wait until the end of the game to learn what they talked about.
One deer down!
I turned around. My enhanced vision revealed Hunter standing about one-hundred yards away on elevated ground. His lips were drawn back as he proudly stood over the dead deer at his paws.
My stomach rolled when I noted the dark red color staining the fur around his mouth.
I really hated hunting.
I trotted over to my partner, once again confirming the creature bore the Badlands mark.
Great job, Hunter!
Thanks. If wolves could smile, he’d be beaming.
I tried, but failed, to return the happy sentiment.
Hunter picked up on my mood immediately. What’s wrong?
He didn’t know about the recent confrontation. If he had, I had no doubt he would have intervened.
The Coastal Pack tried to attack Asher and Chase, I answered.
Shit.Hunter started to scour our surroundings.
They left,I assured him,but not before giving me the stink eye. I’d say we made an enemy out of them today.
Nothing we can’t handle.Hunter moved closer and gently brushed against me in reassurance.
That, right there, was one of many reasons I was glad to have Hunter as my partner in the Alpha Games. Sure, his romantic aspirations could make things a tad bit awkward, but it didn’t overshadow the fact he was a reliable and supportive teammate.
A bark filled the forest.
Both Hunter and I looked at our allies.
The grey wolf watched us curiously. The black wolf’s expression was much more hostile.
The large shifter emitted another bark, motioning his dark snout to the fallen deer at Hunter’s paws. Then, he threw his head back the direction we’d come from.
