The way he said it had my magic crawling. And I was both too emotional and too focused on making it through the ceremony to bother to push it away. The king hadn’t said it in such a way that he was surprised or proud of me, he said it in such a way that he was proud of himself. Like his lessons were the cause for where I now stood, the crown on my head. Neither Krew or I stood here today because of his efforts or upbringing. We stood here, soul bound and strong, despite him. He was not the creditor. He was not the fire which forged our steel. He was very simply just a pest we wished to squash.

Do try not to draw blood during our wedding ceremony, love.

My eyes went to Krew’s as I smirked.I am doing my very best, but I make no promises.

The king looked from one of us to the other as if he caught the words said between us. We should likely not speak through our bond less than a foot from him, but I also didn’t care. I was done hiding. And I was done playing nice.

I was Enchanted. I was soul bound. I was a Valanova.

And I would do whatever it took to protect Wylan, come what may.

CHAPTER35

We were seated and about to start our dessert when Flora and my mother came over with a jacket for me. Though we were inside, as the night wore on and people began leaving, I was sure to get chilled.

Who was I kidding? I was always chilled.

Flora bowed then beckoned to me to join her so she could hand the jacket over. Our entire table also started to stand, as I was now recognized as royalty, but I quickly told them not to, just as I had seen Krew do dozens of times.

A few paces from the table, I frowned as she helped me into the jacket. “This is lacy to match the rest of my gown. I don’t feel as if it will keep me all that warm.”

But as my arm fully slipped into it, I gasped. It already was warm. The lace, though only a thin material, was somehow heated.

“What is this sorcery?” I whispered.

She grinned. “Your mother and I know how you hate being cold. I had the idea for this long ago, but I could never get my hands on the proper materials to create it. Since I had a team of designers at my disposal, I put one of them on this for you.”

“It isn’t magic?” If it was merely heated with magic, it was sure to wear off eventually while on my person.

She shook her head no.

I sighed in contentment. “A heated jacket. Your best invention yet.”

She beamed.

“Wait,” I whispered just as she turned to go. “Will I start glowing at midnight again?”

Her lips twitched. “No. Not this time. Don’t tempt me though, Your Grace.”

My mother stepped in to hug me. “We will watch your first dance and then disappear right after. I promise.”

“Thank you,” I whispered. “I need to not be worried about you two tonight.”

She smiled at me. “Understood, Your Grace.”

“Mother,” I scolded. “You don’t have to—”

She brushed a piece of my hair back into place. “Of course I do. It isn’t every day your only daughter becomes a princess. I’ve got to live it up.”

“Does this mean I am finally off the hook for your constant chastising of myvulgarword choices?” Maybe there were more perks to becoming a princess than I originally thought.

She didn’t even hesitate. “Absolutely not. You may be a princess, but I will always be your mother.”

With final hugs and bows, they were gone. I sat back down next to Krew to try to enjoy our cake.

Keir was not far from us but at another table. I knew within the room was a group of six men who were from Rallis in charge of taking the sword and swindling it out of here.

The king looked to be on his third or fourth drink, so all was going as planned on that front.
