And then we were off, skipping and spinning around the others. At one point he had to quickly spin us away from another couple to avoid bumping into them, but other than that, he handled it seamlessly. Much like he did everything.
“So,” I said as he spun us around again. “Did you not like Theodore hugging me, or what wasthat?”
His eyes stayed on mine as we bounced forward. “I only wanted to shake hands with him.”
The way he said it confirmed for me what had gone on.
Then he leaned in to whisper, “I know he isn’t the one you reach for at night, love.”
I squinted like I was angry, but my lips gave away that I truly wasn’t. “Well there’s no need to look so smug about it.”
Krew grinned. “I disagree. I feel entirely smug about it and will continue looking as such for the rest of the night.”
He was so belligerently confident that I could not help but tip my head back to laugh.
“Now hang on, gorgeous. Let’s show them how we do this.”
And then he increased our speed and spinning, until I was just sure I was going to either need to grab my knees gasping for air, or until I would have to stop with a headache. We were laughing like fools and spinning around the others.
For a moment in time, we just had fun. The king, Krew’s master plan to usurp him, Warrick, my blood and its healing entity... it all blurred into the background for a few beats in time, and we just lived in the moment.
And what a lovely moment it was. The song ended, and I was winded and glad, still laughing.
The people who had danced with us turned to us and clapped. Which was not at all normal. Normally one song rolled into the next and other than someone being too intoxicated and kicked off the dance floor, we never stopped.
Apparently not sure what to do with the attention, Krew clapped for them back, so I followed suit. It made me care for him just a little bit more. He was so unlike his father in every way possible.
“I need a drink,” I laughed, taking his hand and pulling him along. “Come on.”
As soon as we found the table, a guard handed Krew a flask, I assumed filled with wine or whisky, while I chose to take a regular glass of water.
The orphanage children found us there, taking a drink, and soon I was passed around hugging all the children I missed so dearly.
“Not a froggy yet!” Alani giggled as she hugged my legs. It took me a moment to remember she thought I was going to turn into a frog based on some story they had read at the orphanage.
When I leaned to scoop her up, I noticed Warrick talking to Krew. My heart skipped an entire beat or two.
That’s how it should’ve been every day of Warrick’s life.
“Breathe,” Owen whispered over my shoulder.
The fact that Owen noticed how affected I was meant I needed to get a better grip on my emotions. That or he was far too close to me yet again.
But that gave me an idea. “Alani, would you like to dance?”
She nodded. “Yes.”
I grinned at her. “I found you the best dance partner.”
Her eyes went wide. “You did?”
I nodded seriously. “His name is Mr. Owen.”
Owen cocked his head at me. “Really?”
I laughed. “Really. You’re scaring the children, among others, with your constant presence. Go. Go dance with her. Live a little, Owen. I’m safe here.”
“I can’t leave you guys,” he bit out. “Maybe I would if it was just us, but it’s not. There are far too manypeoplehere.”
