He patted the back of my head. “Then we won’t let him die on us.”
“How?”
He shrugged. “I’ve been toying with becoming kin-bonded with him. To see if my magic can combine with theirs.”
I thought on that a moment.
“Or you could become heart bonded.” Seeing the look on my face, he added, “I know, I know. You don’t want magic. But if both of us were to help, maybe it’d change the tide?”
“You don’t think the two of them will be strong enough to do it?” I asked quietly.
Owen gave his head a shake. “The king is too strong. Ungodly strong for as lazy as he is. I don’t know how it is even possible, but he is.”
“But won’t Krew need every ounce of magic he possesses? Would giving some to me leave him with less?”
“Depends.” Owen shrugged. “Usually the person who gives magic to someone weaker or without can recoup the magic over time. The king obviously did when he bonded with the queen.”
Was I really halfway considering this? Me? With magic?
Owen patted the top of my head. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to make you more overwhelmed. I’m just trying to tell you that I’m with you. I’ve been trying to keep Krew alive on my own since he came up with his stupid plan, and it’s kind of nice to have a comrade in my cause. One I trust.”
“So we keep Krew alive,” I repeated, running my hands along my sides.
“Yeah.”
“And then what?”
Owen’s lips slowly smiled. “I think that’s up to you. Do you fancy yourself a baker in Nerede for the rest of your life, wanting to take a look at all those suitors at the Demir bakery...”
“Or?”
Owen was now grinning. “Do you fancy yourself a princess?”
While I stood there with my mouth open, he laughed and added, “Now. Back to work we go. I know there is a lot going on, but focusing in the training room will give you an outlet of something you can control. Leave outside distractions there, outside of it. And when you’re in here? Bring it.”
CHAPTER22
The following day, training was easier. Probably because I was better rested. And knowing Owen was with me in trying to come up with a better plan, one in which Krew didn’t die, helped. Krew hadn’t kissed me again, but he wasn’t exactly keeping his distance from me either.
We had both admitted there was something going on between us, but neither of us really knew what to do with it, apparently.
Owen and I finished up with training, I grabbed a quick shower, and then we headed straight to the kitchen near Krew’s wing, since I owed Silvia some cookies. I made a double batch and headed upstairs with enough for Krew and enough for Silvia.
It was only lunch time, so I was planning on reading. Krew had given me his mother’s first journal that morning, and I was anxious to begin reading it. I wanted to know more about this woman who had at one point apparently loved the evil man who was our king.
“I’m going to read,” I told Owen, trying not to be too excited.
“Then I’m going to nap on the couch,” Owen offered.
Movement outside caught our attention, both of our heads snapping the direction of the balcony at the same moment.
“What is he doing?” I asked. “It’s freezing out there.”
Owen sighed. “He does this sometimes.”
“It’s raining right now. Kind of. Will probably turn to snow at any moment,” I argued. “He doesn’t even have a coat on.”
Owen held up a hand and was gone for a few moments, rummaging through the closet at the door and bringing back an umbrella with him. He handed it to me. “Here. I’ll be in the hallway if you guys need me.”
