“I can assure you, you do not need to babysit me, Krew,” I said somewhat defensively.

He cocked his head. “Are you sure about that?”

“Yes.”

“So making questionable decisions isn’t your norm, then?”

Was he purposefully trying to make me angry? I decided not to give him that luxury, so I spun around and let him stare at my back instead. “Have a nice evening, Your Royal Moodiness.”

Not long after he left, Easton came and stood outside with me. I assumed Krew had told him to. Despite being annoyed, I wrapped up in the blanket he threw at me. As the stars began their nightly burn, I wondered how long this little charade was going to take. It appeared Prince Krewan was already sick of me.

CHAPTER7

Owen was right. I did get used to sleeping next to Krew. The pillow divider helped. I also developed a new mode of operation. If Krew was going to give me emotional whiplash from one moment to the next, then I would do my best to be asleep by the time he even arrived.

It wasn’t a hard task because he had been staying up late, I assumed practicing with Keir other than the one night with the Savaryn loyal.

Four nights later, I was finally feeling like I could at least sleep in his presence. Krew was still being moody, but I supposed that was how he’d be with me always being in his space. So we fell into a new routine. In the mornings I’d feed Rafe, check on the lake, and then bake Owen cookies. One morning there had been a meeting with The Six and Keir. Not wanting to be in the way, I’d grabbed a book and headed to the balcony. I was trying to make myself as scarce as possible.

And now here we were, getting ready for another ball. Yet another time we would have to sell our fake relationship, and I was more nervous for this one than the first one.

Was this Krew’s master plan? To seem very infatuated with me for a few weeks, then just let me go? As if he got his...passionsout of the way and moved on?

At this point nothing should embarrass me, but I couldn’t help that it stung a bit.

I decided I needed to have a word with Krew before we went down. Otherwise I would be a nervous wreck all night and somehow mess it up.

“So,” Silvia smiled. “I have gone ahead with the tree idea. Since you never said otherwise.”

I huffed. “I actually forgot to talk to Krew about it. I’ve barely even seen him all week, so I didn’t think to ask him.”

She gave me a shrug. “Just let me know if I need to change the theme or not.” Then she added, “But some good news for you, after the Hallows’ Eve ball, the balls are switching to once every two weeks.”

“What?” I gasped.

She nodded. “The numbers should be down to the final eight by then, so the king feels like every two weeks is adequate.”

“Best news ever,” I muttered. But then a thought struck me. Was Krew planning on kicking me out at the final eight? Was that part of his master plan? The Assemblages were still at ten women each so the final eight was not all that far away.

“There,” Silvia said, doing the last touches to my hair. It was partly up and braided. It’d taken her a while, but it looked lovely.

“Thank you,” I told her. “I do love the color of this gown.” It was dark mauve and fell in ruffles down the skirt.

“It is a good color on you,” she said with a smile. “Have a good night, Jorah.”

Once she was gone, I decided I’d read while I waited for Krew to show up. I wasn’t heading down there until I spoke with him first.

He ended up coming in the door with not much time to spare. And I was going to die of unsurprise.

His eyes found me but then focused on the direction of the bathroom as he continued making his way.

“Krew,” I said as I stood up.

“Yes?”

He was obviously in a hurry because I had to chase him into the bathroom. “May I have a word, Your Grace?”

“Don’t patronize me, Jorah,” he snapped while reaching to turn the shower water on.
