Just before I did, I saw a guard walk in the door, much to Krew’s personal guard’s berating.

Though we were apparently supposed to be sleeping, I could feel Krew’s magic flaring. He was angry.

So I reached the hand beside my face down to link our fingers together, his magic calming with my touch.

“Your Grace,” the guard began.

Krew barely lifted his head.

“Your father has word of some disloyal movement,” the guard began.

I willed my eyes to stay shut. Willed my heart to calm down its beating.

“Your Grace,” the guard continued.

Krew picked his head up. His voice went colder than I had possibly ever heard. And our first meeting hadn’t necessarily been warm either. “I will follow the lead in my morning rounds.Get. Out.”

The guard tried once more, “Your Grac—”

“Get outnowor I will make you get out,” Krew snapped. “Your choice.”

With a huff of air in anger, the guard spun and left.

“Sorry, Your Grace,” Krew’s guard apologized to him as he lifted his arm back off me. “They won’t take no for an answer.”

Krew groaned. “They’re going to keep coming. It’s not your fault, Romero. I’ll talk to my father.”

And then we were alone again. Alone and in bed. And Krew was in no hurry to leave.

I spun toward him, trying not to yawn. “How did you get here so fast?”

He shrugged. “I was having trouble sleeping so I heard them.”

“Why? Would you like your bed back?”

He shook his head. “It doesn’t matter if it’s in here or in there. I’m just not used to there being another person up here.”

“Aren’t you always with your inner circle or Owen?” I asked as I wiggled back into the covers and calmed my hammering heart.

“Not to sleep with.”

I smirked as my eyes couldn’t help but fall back shut. “You aren’t sleeping with me either.”

“About that.”

My eyes flew open. “What?”

“I’m afraid we are going to have to sleep in the same bed for a few nights in here. Until my father stops sending men just to see if we are together.”

“What?”

“We got lucky that time and the good news is that it should only take a few more times and then my father will believe us. Between the dancing and the two times his men have seen us in bed together, we are doing an excellent job of making this believable.”

“What?”

Krew gave me a lazy smile. “Give it a few nights. I’ll do my best to give you your space during the day. I understand it’s not ideal.”

Not ideal? This man who had me completely jumbled from one dance expected me to be relaxed enough around him to fall asleep? “Here’s to not getting any sleep this week then.”
