I swallowed down my emotion. “Do you really think the king would’ve sent a royal healer for anyone other than Krew?”
Owen shook his head. “Probably not, no, but the king would’ve sent the royal healer if Krew had so much as a scratch.”
I shook my head and looked up at the ceiling of the black carriage, hoping and praying to all the Gods long since gone that Krew was okay.
He’d promised me he was coming back to me.

We were finallythrough the last wall into Kavan Keep. I had cried. I had imagined Krew’s death no fewer than five hundred different ways. And the blanket Owen had warmed for my lap was doing nothing to warm me.
Owen hopped out to speak to the men on the wall. Not wanting to be left behind again, I got out with him. Owen had sent Emric to Krew too, even though neither of us knew what was going on.
“How far back is Prince Krewan?” Owen demanded to the guards on the wall.
There was a clacking and grinding noise, and a platform of sorts was lowered. Someone was coming down to talk to us rather than yelling down at us, at the wall which was far higher than the rest.
“Kendric,” Owen greeted, clearly knowing the dark-haired man. “Prince Krewan ordered me to take Jorah out of Nerede when the disloyal showed up. We’ve sent help at every wall and saw a carriage just go by with a royal healer. Tell me what the hell happened back in Nerede.”
Kendric stood and crossed his arms over his chest. “The prince was attacked and shot with an arrow as most of the disloyal fled. Two are apprehended, two are dead.”
Krew was shot?I felt all the blood drain from my face. I was certain I was going to fall over, so I grabbed a hold of Owen for a moment.
“Shot where?” Owen asked.
“Left shoulder,” Kendric explained.
Owen gave me a look that said he was relieved. Like Krew getting shot in the shoulder with an arrow was not something to even concern myself with.
I let go of him and tugged my coat closer around me, protection against the cold.
But then Kendric added, “The arrow was laced in iron.”
My eyes tried to leave my head. Had I just heard that correctly?
“What?”Owen snapped, his magic flaring to life.
Kendric gave his head a shake. “Dirty bastards shot him with iron, Raikes.”
On second thought, I didn’t care how many of them survived.
“And Prince Krewan?” Owen asked.
Kendric shrugged. “Will be okay. They had to remove the arrow and are on the way now.”
Owen gave him a curt nod. “Thanks.” He took me by the arm and steered me back toward the carriage. “Let’s get back to the castle to wait.”
“No.”
“Jorah? We can’t go back,” Owen tried to reason. “He’s hurt, but the healers are helping him. There’s nothing we can do. Let’s get back to Krew’s wing and regroup while we wait.”
I lifted my chin until I stared Owen in the eyes. “No. If we cannot go back, I am not going another foot forward. Not until he is through this wall.”
Owen’s eyes were full of pity as he looked back at me. “What difference does it matter if we wait at Krew’s wing or wait here?”
“Because here I won’t have to wait the five more minutes it would take him to get into the castle.”
Owen gave me a nod. “Okay, fine.”
