Owen smirked. “I got tired of walking back to the barracks so late at night. Some of the guards stay at the castle in the servant wing, but Krew was not having that, so he put me over here.”
“Oh, so we can use this for training and also as a women’s common room?”
He nodded. “Yeah, but if you want the table moved every day, I’m making you help me.”
“Fine.”
“Fine.”
Deciding if I didn’t stretch now, it was going to hurt, I stood up and began taking deep pulls of air. Owen was really particular about breathing, about giving my muscles the oxygen they needed. Who knew there were so many rules to getting in shape?
Afterwards, Owen threw up his magic to form the little orbs. “You have fifteen seconds to make it to the door.”
Having expected it, I took off, weaving them. In one spot they were so thick I had to turn sideways and sidestep while ducking, but I didn’t waste any time.
I had just arrived when the door to the room opened. I had to take a giant step back to avoid getting a door to the face, so I bumped into one of the orbs and they all disappeared.
“Dammit.”
“Not the way you usually greet me,” Krew said with a smirk as he came into the room.
I smiled at him much like I did any time this morning when I remembered the Harvest Festival and how much fun we’d had the night before, but I spun toward Owen, not to be too distracted. “That was not my fault. Tell me you know that was not my fault.”
“You made them disappear before you got to the door. That’s what I saw,” Owen said with a shake of his head.
I groaned. “Owen, I had to step back, or the door was going to break my face.”
He rolled his eyes. “Fine. Wanna try again?”
I nodded while stomping back over to him.
“What are we doing?” Krew asked.
Owen flicked his finger and the orbs appeared again. “She dodges these everyday as a way to work on her physical awareness. She can’t touch them, or they disappear.”
Krew’s eyebrows bounced upward like he was impressed.
“Can you come over here, My Prince?” I asked as sweetly as possible.
He cocked his head. “Why?”
I looked at Owen before looking back to Krew. “Because you make me nervous. And also, I rarely lose these games with Owen. So please, Your Royal Smugness, come stand by Owen.”
“As you wish,” Krew said with a chuckle as he came forward to stand next to Owen. He passed through some of the orbs and they did nothing, just stayed in their spots.
“Go,” Owen commanded as soon as Krew made it next to him.
I took off again for the door. I knew I wasn’t breathing like I normally did because I was still nervous about Krew being there, but at least he wasn’t in my line of sight now.
I had to dive over the top of a row of orbs and then almost tipped over the next row, having to raise my heels up to avoid crashing into an orb.
That had been close. I took a deep breath and took off again. Ducking, diving, dodging. I didn’t know why I loved this little game of ours, but I did.
I was almost to the door when all of a sudden, the number of green orbs doubled.
“That’s cheating,” I hissed but kept going, not to be deterred.
I had to squeeze by two and then reach between two to touch the blasted door. I turned and glared at Owen.
