Krew swallowed, his Adam’s apple bobbing with the action. “I didn’t want to.”
“Why?”
“Because I never want to forget,” he said gently.
I thought on his words.
He rolled to face me. “My father can be kind. He can be fun. On rare occasions he can even be a good king. I knew over time I’d begin to hate him less and I always, alwayswanted to remember what he’d done. The order he’d made.”
“He has been nicer lately,” I whispered, trying my best not to cry.
“Because you’re helping him with tensions in Nerede and also giving him your blood freely. And don’t think he hasn’t had it tested in other ways too, because though I work with his scientist, I’m not dense enough to think it isn’t happening. He’s being nice, but only because you are giving him something he needs. If he’s nice, you’re being manipulated.”
I let out a long sigh. “Stop it, you’re ruining one of my favorite days since being at the castle.”
He grinned slowly. “That good, huh?”
I kissed him. “You sent me Flora, Krew. I don’t even know how you did it, but I am just so thankful for it.”
“I know. You’ve thanked me at least four times with both your words and lips.” He laughed. “She can only stay until the ball to have your gown ready, but I thought you could use someone from home for this dress.”
I was about to kiss him yet again, but there was a sound from the next room. I jerked with the sound, but Krew was standing and throwing on his shirt. “It’s just Owen. He is going to give me a quick update and be gone. Go to sleep, love. I’ll be right back.”
I knew he’d sent Owen on some secret mission of sorts, but I was also incredibly warm snuggled into the covers, with no desire to leave my warm cocoon even if to find out what was going on with those two.
I thought I’d stay up until Owen left and then ask Krew what was going on, but by the time Krew returned to bed, I had already fallen into a wonderfully dreamless sleep.
CHAPTER27
“Are you sure you didn’t miss me?” I asked Owen for what had to be the eighth time.
The previous day had been our weekly day off from training. Owen told me even he rested from all training one day a week to give both the mind and body time to recover. And though Owen had been around the previous day, after sleeping in, I’d spent the entire day plotting and planning my gown with Flora. There was a great dose of laughter and gossiping involved too.
Owen snorted. “Probably half as much as you missed me.”
I laughed as we headed back to Krew’s wing after training. My shoulders were burning just as bad as they had the first day with the wooden sword. It was going to take a lot of getting used to, apparently.
I headed for a hot shower while Owen let Silvia know we had returned. I didn’t have anything to do today, so I thought I’d read another of Krew’s mother’s journals. He had brought me two or three more with more memorable passages he’d thought I’d like.
I shut off the water and grabbed the fluffy towel waiting for me with a smile on my face, imagining all the things Krew must have gotten in trouble for as a young prince.
I brushed my teeth again, as was habit after training, and heard the door to the bathroom slide ajar.
Silvia was speedy today. “I was just about to—” My words died on my lips as I spun to find Krew and not Silvia.
Krew’s eyebrows went up, taking in the fact that I was in a towel and no more.
“Krew!” I gasped. “Get out. I’m not decent.”
He hesitated where he stood at the door. “You could be less decent, and I wouldn’t be opposed to it.”
“Krew!”
He squinted at me. “The shower water shut off forever ago and you’re not dressed yet?”
“Evidently not! Scold me for it later. Now out, Your Grace. Until I am dressed.”
“If I must,” he said, a smirk tugging on the corner of his mouth as he left me.
