Keir must have sensed my looking at him as his eyes met mine for a brief moment.
I reached down and played with my bracelet, not sure if he’d see it or not.
“Come here!” Gwen exclaimed.
“What is it?” Molly asked.
“There is a chocolate peanut butter truffle!” Gwen said while pulling my arm. “It is to die for.”
“You had me at chocolate,” I told her.
“You two and your desserts,” Molly groaned, but took my other arm as we went in pursuit of truffles.
I popped one in my mouth and sighed. She was right. It was amazing. And though made from peanut butter, the truffles didn’t make my mouth dry. It was just the right amount of peanut butter and chocolate. I wondered if there was some sort of cracker mixed in, as to not make them too sticky or too overwhelmingly peanut buttery.
Rinaldi brought me another water and we stayed within arm’s reach of the tray of truffles, Renna soon joining in.
“Do you think when we don’t have to do our two hours in the common rooms anymore, we can just play cards for two hours every day?” Molly whispered.
“We really shouldn’t more than once or twice a week,” I chided. “Lest we get found out.”
Renna squinted. “You just know we are improving and do not want to get beat.”
I laughed. “That is not it. I promise.”
She smirked, looking particularly lovely in her lavender gown. “Want to walk the room with me? I’m getting restless.” It was something she did often. I wasn’t sure Renna could stand still if she tried.
“Sure.”
“Have the last couple of days gone better?” she whispered as soon as we were out of hearing range of the others.
I shrugged. “So far the king has left me alone, so yes.”
“This is the first day you seem yourself again,” she admitted.
I didn’t want to tell her what I had seen and why it had made me reserved. But at the same time, I also wanted to warn her to be careful around Prince Krewan. If I didn’t warn her and something were to happen to her, I’d never forgive myself.
“Please be careful,” I whispered. “I am worried about a lot of things right now, and one of them is you and Molly.”
Her forehead creased. “What?”
I shrugged. “That’s all I feel safe saying. Just be careful, please.”
She cocked her head. “Prince Krewan can be cold and harsh, Jorah, but he’s harmless.”
I didn’t even hesitate. “I disagree.”
“What? Why?”
I shook my head. “I cannot tell you why. Just please be careful.”
She reached out to stop me by placing her hand on my arm. “Okay. I will be. Thank you for caring enough to tell me.” And then her breath caught, so I turned toward whatever she was looking at.
It was Delaney and Keir. On the balcony. Kissing. At the same spot he used to always take me.
I slammed my eyes shut. That was the last possible thing I had wanted to see tonight. I had been reeling from seeing Prince Krewan murder someone in the forest, and barely gotten my wits about me yesterday and today, and now this.
Keir kissing someone else.
