He strode over to the counter and plopped down next to Owen.

Prince Krewan sat down on the other side of Owen. “I noticed you downstairs this evening, but I thought you weren’t to be on Jorah’s duty until the end of the week.”

“Well,” Owen began as he smirked at me before he looked at Keir. “We ran into a little hiccup.”

“I don’t like hiccups. What kind of hiccup?” Prince Krewan asked while I handed a roll to Prince Keiran.

“She found me,” Owen admitted with a sigh.

Prince Keiran laughed so hard he almost dropped his roll.

Owen continued, “She figured out I was there. I woke up to her opening the damn shelf.”

Prince Keiran kept laughing and even Prince Krewan was possibly smiling a little.

“She demanded to know who the hell I was,” Owen added, “and then chastised me for sleeping on the job.”

Prince Keiran snorted. “I was not surprised when he told me the reason for moving up the removal of Wallace. Not even a little.”

Prince Krewan gave a shrug. “Owen’s snoring isexcessive.”

This right here was who they were when they didn’t have their court masks on,I thought while listening to them banter.

“But why are you here in the kitchen?” Keir asked as he finally took a bite of his dinner roll. I didn’t have time to answer before he added, “Oh wow. Krew, you gotta try these.”

Prince Krewan squinted at me as if trying to decide if it was safe.

I gave him a shrug. “Owen has had four, so if you’re worried about poison, he’ll be the first to go.”

His lips curved upward slightly as he reached for a roll.

“Well,” Owen said again, “she kind of freaked out on me in the hallway after you had to be a hero and dismiss her first.”

“Oh yes, that,” Keir said just before taking another bite.

“Idiot,” Krewan added.

For once, I actually agreed with Prince Darkness.

I rubbed at my temples. “Time in the commons with the others is going to be so fun tomorrow. I should probably get to bed. It’s sure to be a trying day.”

“Will you actually sleep tonight though?” Owen said as he stood up.

“You haven’t been sleeping?” Keir asked, confused.

I squinted at Owen for sharing that information. “Stop prattling on about me.” I turned my attention toward Keir. “It’s a lot to take in. Most people are nice, while others treat me as if they wish I would be taken out with the trash.” It took every ounce of my determination to not glare at Prince Krewan as I said it.

No one said anything for a few beats, probably because they knew I was right.

“Well I can’t fix that, not sure if I just helped or hurt that, but can I at least walk you guys up?” Keir finally asked.

I shook my head. “Please don’t. My nerves cannot take any more of your flirting tonight. I already had to rage bake as it was.”

I heard laughter, but not only Owen’s laugh that sounded joyous. This one was more of a chuckle. I turned my head and was shocked to see Prince Krewan laughing. Actually laughing.

Prince Keiran ignored him, held up a finger to Owen, and pulled me out of the kitchen and into the hallway. “I’m sorry I made you rage bake,” he said gently.

He reached toward me, and I fought off the urge to flinch. Though I was beginning to trust him, years of avoiding the Enchanted couldn’t be erased in such a short amount of time.
