He held up his free hand. “My wing has multiple rooms, I can assure you. And I wouldn’t mind you being closer, being around to pester.”

I smirked before remembering something. “Owen told my mother I am probably not safe anywhere anymore, now that the king knows his magic will not work on me.”

Keir gave me a slow nod. “That’s true. It’s safe to say you will have a guard handpicked by me for a while, Jorah. I know that infringes on your freedoms, but I truly only mean to keep you safe.”

I leaned my head over so it rested on his shoulder. “Balancing all these different games and schemes. I’ve been here a week and I’m already tired of it. Doesn’t it ever get to be too much?”

He sucked in a breath. “Yes,” he admitted. He reached for my chin to bring it up to look at him. “Yes, it does. All the time. You were my selfish reprieve from them.” He paused. “And I should send you home. I should send you away from here. I should be that honorable.”

I found I wasn’t breathing. “But?”

He shook his head. “But I cannot.” He closed his eyes. “I can’t bear to lose you now that I know you. And if you are no longer safe no matter where you are, I’d prefer you to be close to me.” With that, he leaned in and kissed me gently, his lips softly pressing into mine before he added another kiss to my temple.

He stood. “I should go. Before I fall asleep here on your settee. Tomorrow the new game starts. The one where I begin to become in public the pompous ass you always thought I was.”

“Can’t wait,” I murmured.

He laughed and crouched back down to my level. “I’ll come to you, though. Here. Every night if I have to. This,” he squeezed my hand, “is worth fighting for. This is the real game, Jorah.”

I wasn’t sure if he left me feeling more dread or excitement.

CHAPTER20

Aknock on the door the next afternoon brought Owen in. “You have a special delivery.”

Knowing this was day one of Keir’s new plan to basically ignore me, I was intrigued.

Some castle servants began bringing in a huge chair, placing it over by the window. I thought they were done and that would be it, but then there was a small box that was placed on the bed.

I went to the box and slowly slid the top off. Two even smaller boxes were in the larger box, with a note on the top.

When you touch this, I’ll know you are thinking of me.

-Keir

I opened the box and found a bracelet. It wasn’t as ostentatious as I had seen some of the others wear, it was simple, weighed next to nothing, and had one lone jewel in the center.

“That’s lovely,” Silvia said from over my shoulder.

I nodded. I loved it. The fact that it wasn’t thick with diamonds stacked on top of diamonds made me love it even more. Keir found me something lovely and simple. Something for me specifically.

There was another note inside the last box.

Stop sitting on the floor. And here are some truffles to help get you through tonight.

-Keir

I snorted a laugh. “Insufferable man.”

I handed a truffle to Silvia before I had her help me clasp the bracelet on.

“You look devastating in gold,” she informed me.

I smirked at her. “I would feel more devastating if I didn’t know Prince Krewan’s women were all to wear silver.”

Silvia’s forehead creased.

“Together we are sure to look like a treasure chest,” I offered.
