“So that was Will,” I said with a winced smile as I sat next to Owen. “Can you both stop being irritable with me? Because I did nothing wrong.”

Owen snorted and looked out the window in a pout.

Krew rolled his head from one shoulder to the other and reached into his coat pocket to pull out something in his hand, lightly tossing it to me.

It was a small container of healing ointment.

“Put that on the scratch on your collarbone or I will,” he demanded, still sounding angry. “Every time I see it, it makes meirritable.” His magic flashed in his eyes. “Moreirritablethan I am about your jackass of an ex.”

I rolled my eyes but noted he did actually curse for once. “Okay.”

He squinted at me.

“What?” I asked. “You want me to do it right this minute?”

“Yes.”

I glared at him but began opening the small jar. “And then you’ll stop being mad at me?”

His hand reached out to stop mine. “I am not mad atyou, love. I am merely astonished that he felt he had a right to act like he owned you.”

While I sat there stunned, Krew let go of my hand and leaned back in his seat.

“See?” Owen said as he gestured toward Krew. “He gets it. Exactly. That’s exactly why I don’t like him. He acts as if we took away his favorite toy.”

I looked up at the ceiling of the carriage. “And the crown owns me now so no one else is allowed to?”

Krew’s eyebrows furrowed so fast it was distracting. “No,” he snapped. “No oneowns you. No one but you.”

I opened my mouth to argue, but the words got lost with the intense glare Krew was sending me.

Owen added, “How many times do you want me to stand there while he disrespects you like that? I do it enough with the king when I’m left with no other choice. Don’t force me to do it more often than I already have to.”

I sighed. “Okay, I get it. Just stop being pouty. Both of you. I had a great day otherwise. Don’t let Will ruin it.”

“Fine,” Owen groaned as he looked back out the window. “Pet one wolf and think you get to boss us around.”

Krew smirked. “I think she did that before this morning, Raikes.”

“Defiantly feisty,” Owen reminded him.

I shook my head while I dipped my finger into the ointment. “The two of you are ridiculous.”

There was no sign of Rafe when we walked back to the castle. Nor were there any Enchanted lying in wait trying to attack us. It was back to being quiet.

By the time Owen and I returned to Keir’s wing, Keir was already gone for the weekly Savaryn family meeting. I was bummed because I had wanted to tell him about the wolf, but Owen and Silvia playing some cards with me while I waited made up for it.

For the first day in a long time, it had been a great day.

CHAPTER44

Adinner with the royal family and a ball back-to-back?

This was going to be a long few days.

My dress for the fancy dinner was a lavender color that somehow almost looked gray. It reminded me of my blue dress I wore on the very first night with the hints of gray. It was strapless, but kept everything covered well enough. The top was covered with what looked like sparkling ice until my waist where it branched off. Still, it wasn’t quite the standard of dresses I had been wearing to the balls. It was simpler. Simple but powerful. And I loved it.

Silvia took extra care with my hair that afternoon as she curled it in thin strips, as if sensing how worried I was about the dinner.
