In record speed we were to the door to Keir’s wing.

I didn’t want to go in. I just wanted to leave. I wanted to leave this castle and never look back. But that wasn’t an option I was allowed.

I had put on this damned dress and played the part I was supposed to. I had been humiliated and done it with a smile for Keir. I had flirted and danced and acted comfortable in a dress I truly hated because that was what he needed me to do.

Meanwhile he had been kissing Gwen. And yes, he needed to kiss some of us. I understood that well. But I had also seen them together. It hadn’t appeared like it was the first time. Nor that it would be the last.

He had humiliated me even further. He told me he’d earn my trust. He told me he’d protect me. And I still ended the night completely humiliated.

Finally in Keir’s wing, I went directly to my room and sat on the foot of my bed. Defeated.

“Do you want me to ring for Silvia?” Owen asked.

I shook my head. “Not yet.”

“He could be awhile.”

Owen’s gentle tone of voice he kept using on me was not making it any easier to stop crying. I sighed. “I know.”

“Do you want me to tell him to get lost?”

I shook my head. “No.”

“How can I fix it? Just tell me what to do.”

“You can’t,” I croaked. “I wore this damn dress and paraded like a harlot. I did exactly what he needed me to do. And I did it well. But apparently, we weren’t both approaching tonight as a team. If we were, he never would have done that to me. Particularly not tonight. Knowing his father had me dressed like this.”

“You’re right,” he agreed.

“So I’ll wait up for him to hear whatever sorry excuse he has,” I told Owen. “Which won’t fix it. But it will at least officially end this miserable night.”

Owen sat down next to me. “Then I will wait with you.”

CHAPTER37

“Jorah?”

I had fallen asleep with my head on Owen’s shoulder, so I jolted with a start.

He knocked again. “Jorah?”

Keir opened the door to my room and sighed with relief. “There you are.”

He took in my appearance, tear streaked face, Krew’s jacket still on me. “What the hell happened back there? What did my father do?”

Fresh tears sprang to my eyes. I swallowed hard and shook my head. “It wasn’t him. It was you.”

“Me?”

“I saw you and Gwen.”

He let out a breath that appeared to deflate his entire body.

I continued, “Then after watching me handle seeing that and then still playing nice, your father took me aside and said there might be a queen in me after all.”

Owen took a heaving breath next to me while Keir snapped,“He what?”

“How long?” I asked Keir.
