I stood on my tiptoes and looked over his shoulder just in time to see the wolf running back into the forest.

I glared at Krewan. “Great. You scared him away!”

Krewan shook his head but kept his hands on my waist. “He’s the alpha wolf now, Jorah. You can’t just approach him like that. You have to let him come to you.”

“And has he ever come to you?” I asked brattily.

“No.”

“Well then.” I huffed as I turned to look at the other two. “At least tell me you guys all saw him too. That I’m not dreaming it up.”

“We did,” Owen stated.

“We definitely did,” Keir agreed.

Krewan rubbed at his hair as if frustrated. He was still standing close to me, like he thought I might chase after Rafe or something.

“What?” I asked.

He lowered his hand and shook his head at me. “You. You constantly remind us you are only a baker. Also you. You don’t hesitate to approach a wolf.” He paused. “I don’t even know what to do with you.”

“Never a dull moment?” I asked him with thick sarcasm.

His lips twitched. “Indeed.”

“Unless you’resulking,” Keir deadpanned as he threw an arm around me.

Krewan laughed. “Don’t be such a thunderhead, Keir.”

I tried to contain it, but somehow the laughter bubbled up and out.Thunderhead? What kind of comeback was that? I had heard Krewan use knucklehead on more than one occasion, but never thunderhead.

Everyone was looking at me like I was the one who had just called someone a thunderhead. I shook my head and tried to quit laughing. “I’m sorry.” I burst out laughing again. “Did you just call Keir a cloud?” And then I couldn’t help the giggles that took involuntary control of my body.

“Might have,” Krewan said while a smile played on his lips. “But he definitely deserved it.”

I leaned on Keir and continued giggling away.

By the time we made it back up to Keir’s wing, it was late. So late I wondered if the sun would peek over the horizon at any given minute, but I also felt good about the day. Owen was right. If we couldn’t go to Nerede weekly, we could still make the best of things.

CHAPTER35

Another day, another ball.

I was not in the mood for gowns and glamour, but thankfully Silvia made a days’ worth of prepping enjoyable. The theme for Keir’s women that night was silver. Silvia painted my fingernails and toenails white and then applied dark gray makeup to my eyelids to match.

The only good news about this ball was that Keir’s Assemblage was down three more women, and I was still here. The harems were down to sixteen each.

“Have you heard any whispers about tonight and the entertainment?” I asked Silvia. If there was going to be anything bizarre happening, I hoped I could at least be warned. As Owen liked to frequently remind me, I hadn’t yet mastered the faux impassive look.

She shook her head. “None. Though Aiyana’s family is going to be there. So head’s up.”

I sighed. “Got it.”

A knock on the door to my room had her pausing. She came back into the bathroom a minute later with a large box.

“What’s that?” I asked.

She shrugged. “Another gift from your prince?”
