“Or in the king’s case, to put on iron gauntlets.”
I gasped as the brothers fought on.“What?”
“Iron blocks our magic. So containing our hands and using iron renders us powerless,” he explained.
That helped explain why they called it Iron Will. I naturally blocked out magic. “But why would the king need to use that? You are all his army.”
“Yes, but not all willingly,” Owen stated firmly.
I shook my head. “Iron gauntlets. Just when I thought I couldn’t dislike him more.”
Owen sighed and looked back to the meadow. “I hope you never have to see them.”
One of the brothers let out a grunt, snapping our attention back to them. Keir had what looked like chain links of his blue magic and sent it wrapping around one of Krew’s wrists, yanking hard and bringing him to the ground.
“Someone’s a showoff tonight,” Krew groaned from the ground.
Just when I thought they were winding down or done, Krew used his free hand to send a burst of wind at Keir’s feet that was so fast, none of us had seen it coming. Keir was also knocked off his feet and because of that, lost his grip or concentration on the chain holding Krew down.
In seconds they were on their feet and going again.
“How long do they do this?” I asked Owen.
“Hours.”
I gasped again. “What?” The amount of magic I had seen them just use on each other was more than I had ever seen in my entire life, and they could maintain this forhours?
He chuckled. “While everyone else sleeps, this is where they are. Putting in the work necessary.”
Neither of the men before me were anything like I had imagined. They were up late enough as it was at all the Assemblage dinners and events, but even after all of that, they still came down here and did this? Tried to beat the hell out of each other with their magic?
“Wait. What shape does Krew’s magic take?” I asked suddenly.
Before Owen could respond, Krew sent a blast of magic in our direction. His navy magic slowed down as it neared me, and I saw a glowing wolf lazily prowling toward me. Within inches of touching me, it simply sat down in front of me.
“A wolf?” I whispered impressed. The wolf made of crackling magic even had eyes. He looked like I could pet him, but I knew the moment I touched it, it’d vanish. He was gorgeous. As gorgeous as Rafe. Probably about the same size too.
Owen laughed. “He found Rafe not long after his magic settled. He took it as some sort of sign to help him.”
“I would’ve done the same thing,” I admitted.
Keir threw some sort of magic at Krew and the wolf disappeared.
Twenty minutes later, the princes finally called a truce long enough to breathe in huge pulls of air, both of their chests heaving.
Another blast of magic was sent our way, this time Keir’s brighter blue. His raven flew a circle around me before trying to land on me, but dissolving as soon as it got too close.
“Damn,” Keir sighed. “Had to try it.”
Krew burst out laughing.
“What am I missing?” I asked.
Keir was now laughing also. “I was trying to flirt with you.”
“By pecking me to death with your raven?”
I had never heard Krew laugh so hard.
