I’d been so entirely wrong about him.
“So why tell me everything? All of this?” I asked quietly. “You all kept me in the dark forweeks.”
Prince Krewan flashed me a smile that was not a kind one. “Because Owen here is apparently too valiant to go down as a villain in your book and because I know for a fact that not only do you have Iron Will, but you are also sleeping in Keir’s quarters and are never without Owen or Easton.” He paused and, in his pause, I didn’t so much as breathe. “But mark my words, Jorah Demir, if I ever find out you so much as take a step without Owen or Easton or feel the need to tell anyone a word of this entire conversation, you will answer to me. I will do anything, and I meananythingto keep that boy safe.”
CHAPTER30
By the time we made it back to the castle, back to Keir’s wing, I was so exhausted and drained from the day, I was relieved there would be no evening meal.
Keir wasn’t there and wouldn’t be back until late, or so Owen said. Silvia brought me some food and laid out my pajamas for bed. Which was far more than she needed to do, but such was Silvia.
“You were quiet the rest of the way back,” Owen stated.
I shook my head and gave him a shrug. “I don’t know what to say about today. Other than thank you for bringing me in on things.”
Owen grimaced. “I maybe should have brought you in on the disloyal and left out the rest, but it all kind of just played out before me.”
I smirked but then realized it had been Owen, not Keir, that had been the one to finally tell me things. Or Owen to force Prince Krewan to tell me things, anyway.
Owen seemed to read my mind. “I’m sorry none of us told you sooner. Had I known you truly did see what happened to Laurent like I worried you had, I would’ve told you right away.”
I gave him a tight smile. “I’m just glad someone finally did.”
Owen gave a shrug. “We all wanted to tell you. Keir just lets Krew decide on those things because he knows what Krew is trying to protect. He has the highest stakes.”
That made a ton of sense, actually, but couldn’t Keir have at least told me part of it?Anyof it?
“I have to head down early,” Owen added. “These weekly parties with the loyal families are the worst.”
“Sorry,” I said and meant it.
“On occasion, the princes have drunk a bit too much just to get through the evening.”
My eyebrows shot up. In all our evening dinners, I hadn’t seen either of them drink much at all. Then again wasn’t Laurent going to be tortured at one of these gatherings? “It’s that bad?”
Owen gave me a nod. “It’s that bad.”
“Well good luck?”
“Thanks,” he laughed. “Easton is already here, I just wanted to make sure you were good before I left.”
I yawned. “I’m shot. That was a lot of information. I think I’ll probably just go to sleep early.”
“Good night, Jorah,” Owen said as he spun and left.
I ate, changed out of my day dress and into my silk pajamas and walked around Keir’s wing. It was weird we were sharing space but also not. I still had my own bedroom and bathroom within his wing, so it didn’t really seem like it. I found the book Keir had read to me on his nightstand and took it back to my own room. Somehow reading it in his bed, like I was waiting for himin his bed, seemed too much. Too assuming.
I hadn’t realized I had fallen asleep, because I rarely did while reading books, but the stress of the day must have finally been catching up to me. The next thing I knew, the book was being slipped from my hands and closed on the nightstand.
Keir was back. I didn’t know what time it was, but it was late. Or early depending on how you looked at it.
“Hi,” I whispered.
He reached for my hand. “I didn’t mean to wake you. Just wanted to check in.”
“How was your evening?”
He sighed. “Well. It’s over. That’s all I’ve got.”
