“No one,” she denied too fast, not daring to look him in the eye.

Uncle Buddy just shook his head and made a get going motion. “Fifteen minutes,” he said before turning and addressing the next customer at the window. “What can I get you?”

Debbie stood there for a minute before pouring herself a lemonade and then leaving the food truck. With no destination in mind, she started walking. It was always entertaining to walk along the fairgrounds here. The atmosphere was amazing. The different displays, watching the children running through the adults to get to games and treats.Wonder if I’ll ever have some kids running around after helping their great uncle make French fries.

“Buy you a limeade?” a voice broke through her thoughts, snapping her head up. Standing in front of her was the guy from earlier.

“Umm, I’ve got one?” Debbie held up her cup. “Well, it’s technically lemonade but that’s just because I didn’t add the lime juice.”Oh way to sound like a moron, Debs.

“A candy apple?” The guy looked so hopeful standing there, Debbie tried to figure out something to say. When she didn’t respond, he nodded and said, “It was worth a shot. Sorry.” Then he turned to leave.

“Wait!” Debbie commanded, he nearly snapped to attention at her tone. “How about just walking with me? I’m really not hungry after being around all the food but I could use some company.” The beautiful smile that lit up his face made her heart thump like she’d just done a mile. “Debbie Hansen,” she said, holding out her hand.

He took her hand and paced a kiss on the back of it. “Rafe Luna. I think you’re meant to be with me.”
