Into this hush spoke Emperor Clajak, who stood before those gathered to address the cosmos.“In the worst of times, we welcome every glimmer of hope that dispels the darkness around us.Today, more than a glimmer shines, as a beacon has been lit thanks to the safe return of our kinsman, spiritual master, and the man you elected to be leader of the Galactic Council of Planets.Neighbors and allies, with greatest gratitude, I give you Secretary-General Mereta.”

A roar of approval filled the arena as Mereta stepped forward. He bowed in respect, reflecting he was but a mere man whose presence was owed to luck and the incredible bravery of those who deserved the accolades given him.

He held up his hands to quiet the crowd. They weren’t eager to concede.Even the Imperial Clan and Royal Council wouldn’t relent, their faces shining in rare accord. His being there was a symbol of the All’s fallibility, and they celebrated his redemption.

He gave them another minute before trying again. It took two additional attempts until they had applauded their hands into submission and their throats had wearied of triumph. At last, he could address them.

“My friends, I have a story to tell you.It isn’t a pleasant story. It’s a tale of anguish and horror, of which you’ve all had a taste. Some of you have had more than a taste. You’ve been forced to swallow a repast of vile poison.I wish I could guarantee you a happy ending to my account. However, the ending hasn’t been written.A joyful conclusion to our current problem isn’t assured.”

Despite the somber beginning, which had brought worry flickering to those myriad faces gazing at him, serenity enveloped Mereta. It had been vital to remind them trials were yet to come. Now wasn’t the time for giddiness, not if these beautiful souls were to continue to remain strong ahead of the oncoming storms. While none would be truly lost in the embrace of death, as his beliefs insisted they wouldn’t, it was important they fight on.It was necessary they stand for right to the potentially bitter end, no matter how the All worked to destroy them.

He allowed a serene smile to warm his features, for the reassurance of victory to shine forth, though their triumph might come after the grave.“What is assured is our commitment to life as we were meant to live it.What is assured is our commitment to hold firm against that which would tear us down. What is assured is our commitment to each other, to protect and aid and shelter our neighbors against our common enemy. We will not break. We will not surrender.Win or lose, we will endure.”

His audience rose to their feet, shouting their solidarity in one deafening voice.
