I stand from the table and look down at my father. “Father, I'm sorry, I need to go. You don't need me for anything else, right?”
My father glares up at me, his jaw ticks. In a way, I think he knows what I'm doing but I don't care. But also, me leaving is disrespectful to him, so it's even worse.
“Good night, Sweetheart.” Uh, I love how he plays the nice father, until he isn't.
Looking over to Ryan and Ace. “Excuse me, gentleman, I have somewhere to be.” My eyes connect with Ace's hungry gaze and I shoot him a playful wink, before I dart out the door.
I've got a race to get to.
Chapter two
ACE
Ican't shake Emma off my mind. She's got my blood boiling with the way she kept snapping those eyes up at me earlier. She's like my new obsession.
Leaving the Casino heading out for a night at the races. My old stomping grounds I haven’t been to since I left years ago, ever since my father shipped my ass away for my training, learning everything there is about the brotherhood. It changed me in ways I cannot explain but being home, I'm finally starting to feel like me again but as a changed man.
My phone pings with a text from Caz, as I maneuver my car through the city streets. I look down and click the file he just sent me named Emma.
I skim through the file, trying to pick up little details about her and what dirt she has, any secrets, boyfriends. When my eyes scan over the words, street race, I pull my car over to the side of the road to quickly read.
She fucking races.
My eyes scan my phone as fast as they can, gaining more and more secrets she holds about her street racing. Has been unbeatable for the last 5 years. And she's racing tonight.
Oh this will be fun.
I clearly have not kept a close enough eye on Baby Girl since I’vebeen gone.
I push the clutch in and shift my car to first. I speed off, slamming gears to get to the race faster now knowing she is going to be there.
EMMA
Pulling up to the starting line before turning my car off. I still have time before the race starts. I get out and my friend Zee comes over to me. “Hey girl.” Zee's like a brother to me, but he doesn't know I'm Heiress of my father's Mafia Empire. I keep that a secret of course. He knows about the Hotel & Casino, that's it, and that's only for his safety.
“Hey, Zee.”
“You ready for this, Em?”
My lips twist into a wicked grin, I'm more than ready. “You know it bud.”
A car pulling in gets our attention and we watch them as they pull up next to my car, ready to get this race started.
“I'll be right back, Em.” I give him a nod before I turn to open my door but a strong arm wraps round my waist from behind, twistingme then pushing me firmly against my car as I snap. “What the fuc-” When I realize who is pressing me against my car with his hard body, my breath catches in my throat. “What the fuck are you doing here?”
“I think the better question is, what areyoudoing here?” Ace growls. I clench my teeth as I shoot daggers at him; what does he want, did he follow me? “It's none of your business what I'm doing here?”
He leans in, his hard body pressing against mine causing a flutter to rise up from my core, then he whispers, “Everything in this city is my business.” I snort a laugh, “Mine too.” I push against his body, peeling my back off my car.
“Let's go girl!” Zee yells out to me. It's time, it's fucking go time. I stare up into Ace's baby blues and twist a smile. “Got to go!” I tease. He cocks a questioning brow, but I slip from his grasp and quickly get in my car, shooting him one last glance before shutting the door and starting her up as she roars to life. Leaving Ace standing there with a raised brow and parted lips, unsure if his face is telling me he's intrigued by me racing, or fucking livid, either way I'm racing.
He's in for a fucking show tonight.
I put my car in gear, as my foot holds the clutch in, waiting on Zee with the starting flag. My blood pumps through my veins with rapid flow, my heart beating against my chest walls with a hard thump. As much as my mind wanders thinking about Ace, I have to focus, this race is a big deal. It's the race that will get me into the states race, racing from state to state, the dream my grandfather had. And the dream I will carry on for him, I just have to make it there.
I look over to my opponent, unable to see me through my blacked out windows, then look back to Zee as he starts to raise the flag.
And the flag drops, dumping the clutch, beauty leaves the line with a deafening roar. Quickly slamming into second, she pulls away from the other car. Letting second reach the end of the gear, I shiftto third as I start my way up the mountain.
