With a grin, Nick turned his cell phone to her. The accolades streamed in. As she handed the phone back to him, it dinged again.
“Oh,” he said.
“What?”
“Liza.” He gave a wry smile. “Good thing we already have a signed contract for the new episodes.”
And they already had flights booked to New York. Kat wasn’t worried. She watched him open the message.
Nodding, he smiled. “All good.” Again, he handed her the phone.
Liza’s simple “congratulations” included a screenshot of hundreds of “likes” from a HomeBuilders page. With undoubtedly more to come. The show was only half over. Kat’s heart pounded as she moved closer and kissed Nick’s cheek. “I claim dibs as number one fan.”
The show ended with the installation of a kitchen island. Nick leaned against it and signed off with the network’s signature phrase.
Kat bounced from the sofa. “That was fabulous.”
Nick stood and slid his arms around her waist. “Hey, I just had an idea. From now on, every time I get to showcase a finished piece, I’m going to add one of your paintings to the room.”
She smiled, warmed from head to toe. This guy. He’d just made his TV debut, and he was thinking of her. “Thanks, but my plate’s a little full right now.”
“Maybe tomorrow we can go to the storage unit and find our painting. I want to finish it and hang it at my place for now. And when we get our own space, it’ll go front and center.”
“Over a fireplace,” Kat added. Summer was waning, and she already looked forward to curling up in front of a fire with Nick. A fireplace was a must.
“Sure.”
“But I don’t think we need to finish it. I think it’s perfect just the way it is.”
Nick pulled her closer. “Really? Did you do more work on it?”
“Nope. But I love it. It’s a little of my style, some of yours, maybe a little rough around the edges. It’s part of our story.” She ran her hands through his hair. “And that’s not finished.”
