“I’m doing my best.”

“Great,” Conley replied. “Go sit on a beach and drink something fancy. Take in some museums or hit some shops to buy something whimsical. Or head to the library and read something you’d never normally select. It might open up new worlds for you.”

Bummed because if he were going to explore the world, he’d rather do it with Mitchell, Pierson held in his sigh. It was his fault that he couldn’t vacation with his mate. “I understand. I’ll do my best.”

“Wonderful. I wanted you to know that Roman spoke with Brooks, and he’d like to meet with you to speak about moving forward without animosity. How do you feel about that?”

“I’m definitely amenable to the idea. I can meet with him at his earliest convenience.”

“We’ll let him know and schedule it for immediately after your first staff meeting, how does that sound?”

“Perfect, thanks.”

“Enjoy the rest of your week. I can’t wait to hear about your adventures.”

“I spent time in one of the Circle of Druids’ gardens today and bought a plant.”

“That’s awesome! I love the gardens around town. I can get tickets or secure reservations for you anywhere if you’re interested.”

“I’ll keep that in mind,” Pierson promised with no real intent. The Reverent Knights had already done plenty for him, so he said his good-byes and tried not to slump to the floor in defeat once he’d hung up. Instead, he grabbed his packages and decided to find homes for his new purchases. Then he’d figure out what the hell to do with himself next.

Chapter 35

When their Monday morning meeting was finished, Mitchell tried not to run to his office to dump his new cases on his desk. Forcing himself to walk sedately made it take far too long, but everyone would find it odd for him to be excited to hang out with Pierson. Once his task was done, he again took his time to cross to the other side of the round table, where his mate was ensconced. At his door, he made his way inside, and locked the damn thing behind him.

“What are you doing?” Pierson demanded.

“I want to speak to you without interruptions.”

Pierson was standing near his chair, so Mitchell took the opportunity to pull him into his arms. “I don’t think this is appropriate for a work setting,” Pierson complained but embraced him.

“Well, we need to reconcile and end the war between us.”

“Everyone expects us to have a reasonable discussion, not make out in my office.”

Mitchell grinned. “I didn’t say anything about kissing.”

“Like I can’t tell what’s on your mind.”

“We need to be on friendly terms from now on, Blondie.”

“I was very friendly with you this morning.”

“I did appreciate the quickie in the shower, but I don’t think it’s proper to have sex at work.”

“I’m not propositioning you, Brooks.”

“I liked seeing you across the table from me this morning at our meeting.”

“That’s because you’re tired of me being home.”

“I nearly had to kill you when you pulled out the cookie sheet yesterday.”

“It was for roasted potatoes, but it was funny to watch the color bleed from your face.”

“You’ve got a real sick sense of humor.”

“How long do you think people expect us to be in here chatting?”
