“He’s the best damn thing that ever happened to me.”
“Good, everyone needs some happiness. Does he have a brother or something?”
“We gotta find you a boyfriend—or better yet, a mate. And no, my guy doesn’t have a brother.”
“Come out with us and help me find somebody.”
“Soon.”
“Bring your guy.”
“We’ll see,” Mitchell lied and waved his friend off. They both had piles of work to do, and there was no point in fantasizing about inviting Pierson to join them at their usual haunt, but he hoped someday to remedy their inability to be seen in public together as a couple.
Chapter 34
By Wednesday morning, Pierson was convinced he was going insane. Mitchell had left for work a full hour early, so it was clearly noticeable. The organization of his kitchen had taken half a day and only because he’d insisted on cleaning all his dishes before finding them a new home. Without any clue how to entertain himself, Pierson had followed whims. It was proving to be a terrible decision. Last night at dinner he’d snapped at Mitchell for hardly touching his food. The indignant man had retorted that it was impossible to enjoy his chicken when he’d been commanded to try seventeen types of cookies the minute he walked through the door.
Properly chastised, Pierson had tried to stay out of his way while he worked, and he’d appreciated the extra effort Mitchell had devoted to thoroughly making love to Pierson twice in a row to burn off some excessive energy. It’d left Pierson feeling greedy and wanting more of Mitchell. After shyly revealing that to Mitchell, his mate was incredulous and told him his balls were aching. It wasn’t necessarily sex Pierson wanted, but he’d said nothing and allowed himself to be cuddled as Mitchell fell asleep within seconds.
Properly convinced that if he remained at home for the entire week he’d thoroughly crack, Pierson snatched his cell phone and raced through his contacts. Once he’d dialed the correct number, he nearly smacked himself in the face with the device in his haste to speak to someone.
“Order of the Fallen Knights, this is Kyle speaking, how can I help you today?” the chirpy voice on the other end said.
“Hey, Kyle, it’s JK Murphy, how are you?”
“Wonderful. Do you know I made sixteen copies of a report this morning without the machine breaking? That’s a new record for me. How are you?”
The notorious destroyer of all things that plugged in was suitably proud of himself, and Pierson smiled. “I’m okay. Have the RKs already left for Council session?”
“Went straight to the Main Assembly Hall this morning. They’re involved in a piece of legislation being questioned today.”
“Oh,” Pierson responded, his heart hitting his toes. “Could you ask them to call me as soon as they get the chance?”
“Of course, everything okay? I can always contact them immediately if it’s an emergency.”
Since his leaders wouldn’t consider Pierson’s dwindling sanity something that precluded the important task of participating in their daily duty to pursue the goals of the entire Council of Sorcery and Shifters, he sighed. “No, it’s nothing like that. I’d like to speak with them about a personal matter.”
“Sure thing, I’ll let them know as soon as they return from lunch. You have any luck finding a new place yet in Vegas?”
“Actually, yeah. I can give you the address now if you’ve got time.”
“Of course I do,” Kyle responded, the clatter of his fingers hitting his keyboard loud in Pierson’s ear. “Fuck, not this again. I already gave you my password, you rotten piece of shit.” There was more typing, then a groan. “Itisthe right password. Oh. Yeah, I guess I do have the caps lock on. Finally with this…okay, what’s the address, Pierson?”
When he rattled off the street and condo number of the place he shared with Mitchell, Kyle swore at his computer.
“What’s this now? It certainly isn’t a duplicate record,” Kyle muttered, making Pierson’s chest seize. Mitchell had assured him it was inconceivable that anyone would put the pieces together and figure out that they shared a roof. Not even in the office yet and their secret was ancient history.
“A duplicate record?” Pierson managed after licking his dry lips.
“Yeah, you know…someone else in the system has the same one. Happens now and again. Maybe another fallen knight lived at that property in the past or something. No worries. I’ll update your card internally.”
Able to get air in his lungs again, Pierson smiled at the idea that if things went well, his return might be the next day. “That’s perfect. Thanks, Kyle.”
“Sure thing, can I do anything else for you?”
“Nope, I’m good. I appreciate your help.”
“My pleasure. Welcome back to Vegas, we missed you.”
