“Surely that can be taken care of when he gets to the tribe willing to take him or perhaps a sanctuary,” Zane responded as the four men traipsed back to the car.
“D’Vaire would probably be perfect. They have an excellent sanctuary, and there are even elves there,” Damian said. “Ellery, I think you’d love it. It’s full of amazing people.”
“Ellery will be living at home with us.”
“I’m sorry,what?” Damian asked.
Chrysander smiled at the elf walking at his side while a chill of fear swept over him as he considered that Ellery was likely half dragon, and his prospect for survival was dim. He didn’t know why Fate would pair him with someone on the cusp of something so dangerous, no one had yet to survive it, but he was going to do his best to help Ellery beat the odds. “Ellery’s my mate.”
Zane gave Chrysander a healthy slap to the shoulder, and Damian turned around with a grin. “Congratulations,” they said almost in tandem. Chrysander was still beaming, but Ellery’s expression was placid and impossible to read. He guessed he was going to have a battle on his hands to convince him he wasn’t like Ellery’s father, but Chrysander was up to the task.
He’d waited over a thousand years for the man at his side, and nothing would stop him from building a strong and loving relationship. But he wouldn’t rush him into his new role; Ellery had a great deal to adjust to. Fate had just made him an emperor, and they both had to serve the Council. While his heart was begging Chrysander to sweep Ellery into his arms and run to some isolated place so they could get to know one another, they had responsibilities that couldn’t be ignored.
Since the moment Chrysander gained his beast, he’d dedicated himself to helping dragonkind, and that was not something either one of them could set aside. Fate had chosen them to be together but also to serve their people, and Chrysander was not the type of person who ever allowed himself to skirt duty. However, though they might not be able to focus solely on each other, Chrysander was grateful that Fate had finally offered him his other half. In time, he hoped to build a loving relationship that fueled them both as they looked toward the future.
