Chapter 30

The night before the matebond Chrysander nonsensically scheduled six weeks too late, he stood on the terrace outside his bedroom with a neat whiskey in his hand. Failure didn’t sit well with him, and he was going to do everything in his power to ensure he prioritized correctly in the future. He put the glass to his lips and heard a faint knock from inside. Chrysander polished off his drink and wondered who could be at the door. His brothers usually just strolled in.

When he opened it and found a stunning elf with big green eyes staring up at him, his dick perked right up. With a mental admonishment for his errant cock, he smiled. “Do you need something?” he asked his mate.

“I hate to bother you so late, but could I come in for a few minutes, so we can talk?”

Chrysander’s mind rebelled at the idea of letting Ellery near his bed, especially when their ceremony was a little more than fourteen hours away, but he hadn’t missed the nerves in his mate’s voice, so he moved aside to allow him entry. “Are you okay?”

Ellery took three steps into the space and came to a halt. “There are beads on your table.”

“I’m going to make you a mourning necklace. I thought it was appropriate since you wanted to visit the D’Vaire memorial garden before our ceremony.”

“Thank you. I did not expect that.”

After shutting the door, Chrysander kept at least six feet between him and the tempting elf-drakeling. “You didn’t answer my question. Is everything okay?”

Spinning to face him, Ellery’s expression grew pained. “I was trying to sleep, and my mind would not allow me to rest. Are you sure you really want to do this? I mean, not that you wish to defy Fate, but is it me you want?”

This is what happened when you delayed everything. You planted seeds of doubt in the one person who should never have worry, Chrysander thought with self-derision. “Ellery, I’ve waited over a thousand years for my other half. In all the fantasies I’ve had over the centuries, none of them came close to the reality of you. Yes, I want to unite our souls. I want us to have an incredible future full of love, friendship, and sharing this mantle of reigning over our people.”

“You do not wish to be lonely any longer.”

“Exactly, and we aren’t going to be. After tomorrow, we have the next two weeks to do nothing but get to know one another better.”

The panic on Ellery’s face hadn’t lessened despite Chrysander’s reassurances, and his gaze hit the floor for several charged seconds. When Ellery lifted his head, his eyes blazed with courage and he squared his shoulders. “What about sex? Are you attracted to me?”

Chrysander blinked. “Why do you think I’ve kept you so far away from my bed?”

“Meeting your mate fills you with hormones, but is it really me you want?”

He gave himself no time to think. Chrysander walked toward Ellery and took his face into his hands. Smoothing his thumbs over Ellery’s high cheekbones, Chrysander smiled at him. “It’s definitely you I want,” he said. The placid guise that blocked anyone from knowing Ellery’s true thoughts slid into place. He’d overwhelmed Ellery, so it was his duty to soothe him. Or that was what he told himself as he leaned down and set his lips on Ellery’s.

The hybrid trembled but didn’t back away. Loosening the stranglehold Chrysander had on his desires, he slid his tongue into Ellery’s mouth. His mate responded eagerly as the kiss became a full-on exploration—an exquisite duel that burned from the inside out. Without thought, Chrysander wrapped Ellery’s lithe body into his arms and dragged him close. It was like holding a live wire; the touch of him ignited Chrysander all the way down to his soul.

If a moan escaped, it couldn’t be helped. Chrysander gave himself over and simply enjoyed the solid form against his own. His dick was rigid and aching, but Chrysander ignored its throbbing desire to drag Ellery to the closest flat surface. Against him was an answering hardness, and he exulted in Ellery’s passion. The hybrid smoothed his palms up over Chrysander’s shoulders and into his hair as they continued to make out.

There was no sense of time and his conscience be damned, they both deserved these moments of unbridled passion. The last thread of his sanity was there to keep him from shaming Ellery, and though he hated the idea of stopping, it was inevitable. With no small amount of regret, Chrysander pulled away and with one last press of his lips to Ellery’s elegant face, he released him.

Ellery’s green gaze was baffled as they stood there, staring at one another, dragging air into their desperate lungs. The elf-drakeling raised shaky fingers to his mouth. “I did not expect it to feel that way,” he confessed softly. “I underestimated the passion I would feel.”

Chrysander’s chest nearly puffed out with pride, but concern was weighing too heavily on his mind. “Ellery?”

“Yes?” he asked, a small smile playing at his swollen mouth.

“Get out of my room.”

His grin turned roguish as he lowered his hand to his side. “Why? Do you not wish to talk to me?”

“If you don’t think I won’t toss you out on your pointy ears, you’re sadly mistaken.”

Ellery laughed but gratefully moved toward the door. “You answered my question sufficiently.”

“Sufficiently? I assure you tomorrow night will be more than sufficient for us both.”

“I agree. Now…if you will excuse me, I need to retire to my room. I have an intense desire to jerk off.”

“I had no idea you were so evil.”
