“I wanted to tell you that we haven’t gotten far in our search for your father,” Chrysander revealed once they were alone again.
“There is a tiny portion of me that is curious about what kind of man leaves his pregnant mate and why, but if we never find him, I can live with that.”
“I understand. If I were in your shoes, I believe I’d have the same viewpoint. I’d like to believe no dragon, or anyone else for that matter, would do something so cruel, but it happens far too often.”
“Unfortunately,” Ellery responded, pleased that Chrysander was on the same page. The dragon was incredibly handsome in the low, intimate light of the restaurant. Ellery ached to know him better and explore the desire in his blood. The man Fate gave him wasn’t perfect, and their matebond wasn’t ideal yet either, but he hoped Chrysander yearned for the same things as he did.
“Did I mention how gorgeous you look tonight?”
“I believe you told me that a few times when I came downstairs for our date.”
“What can I say, I enjoy you in elven attire.”
“Are you saying I do not look good in my dragon clothes?”
“Nope, I doubt there’s anything in this world that could make you less attractive.”
Ellery smiled. “I feel the same about you, but thanks. I have always considered myself rather plain.”
“There’s nothing plain about you.”
Their food arrived, and it was delicious, but nothing beat the company. “I keep asking myself how strange it will be when I have to look in the mirror and see a different eye color.”
“I’ll miss that perfect jade green.”
“What color were your eyes before?”
“Brown. Dark brown. It was more difficult for me to adjust to first having silver rings, and it was a total shock when I got the gold. In my mind’s eye, I can already see how incredible that green’s going to look with the gold.”
“I guess you better hope I am a green dragon.”
“I wouldn’t have a single complaint if you were.”
Ellery refused to address the prospect of his death again. It was this great big anvil above their heads, and he was losing patience with it. He focused instead on the ambience of the lovely room he was in and the delightful company of Chrysander. In a little over a week, they’d be united in every way possible. He only hoped it wasn’t a decision either one of them ever regretted.
