“Why is that?” he asked as he tossed the towel into the bathroom and joined Ellery on the bed.
“Because then you could tell everyone I preferred Council sessions while I am invisible when in reality, I would be home gardening or something else fun.”
“If I have to go, you do too.”
Ellery moved so his head was pillowed on Chrysander’s chest. Chrysander smiled as he wrapped him in his arms. With each day they spent together, Ellery grew more affectionate and he loved it.
“I have thought about it.”
“And?”
“And I still would prefer to stay home.”
Chrysander gave his ass a light swat. “Too fucking bad.”
Lifting his head, Ellery locked eyes with him. The jade mixed with the rings of gold was satiated and solemn. “I know you are not thrilled about tomorrow, but I am. I will be glad when we no longer have this issue between us.”
“Believe it or not, me too. I wish we had a fast-forward button.”
“About three days?”
“If it’s resurrection, then yes.”
“So, is there any part of you that does not think I need that spell?”
Chrysander couldn’t lie to him, so he shook his head. “Prove me wrong, Ell.”
“I am certainly going to try.”
Desperate to keep the mood light, Chrysander tried a smile. “You know, there would be one good thing for me if you had to deal with resurrection sickness.”
“What is that?”
“I could build up my strength. Eat a bunch of vitamins. Pilfer your protein powder.”
“Say that three times fast.”
“I don’t even know how I said it once.”
“We joke about it, but you have not exactly pushed me away this week.”
“Nor will I ever,” Chrysander told him after a firm kiss.
“I really like you.”
“You get another kiss for that one,” Chrysander said, then swept his lips against Ellery’s twice. “I really like you too.”
“How does someone know when they are in love?”
“I’m sure it’s different for everyone. I know I wouldn’t be so horrified and devastated at the mere thought of losing you if I wasn’t already in love with you.”
“You never said anything.”
“I didn’t think you were ready, Ell. I have a lot to make up for. I wanted to be sure I was in your good graces before I told you.”
“I think that is what is propelling me so hard to succeed, even though I know I can be resurrected. I do not want to hurt you.”
Chrysander smoothed a hand down Ellery’s back. “It’s not like I think you’re doing any of this on purpose.”
