“Congratulations, Grigori,” Nikolai said as he squeezed the back of Grigori’s neck with affection. “He’s gorgeous and accomplished. Be nice to him, and you just might make each other happy.”
“Your mother’s worried, but it’s going to be wonderful. You make a stunning couple with your light eyes and his so dark,” his father remarked.
“Makes me wish we’d done a better job of getting our schedules coordinated so we could’ve accepted the invitation from Chieftain Cadlyr Cwylld-D’Vaire to visit his home. Your mate’s been waiting for you,” his mother commented as she pulled him into her arms. “My boy, you’re going to be so happy at Court D’Vaire. I understand the most incredible people live there.”
He embraced her tightly and anticipated finding that out for himself. “Does this mean I get to go home now?” Grigori asked once she stepped back.
Irina narrowed her eyes. “Nice try. Let’s find some champagne, my loves. We have much to celebrate.”
Chapter 8
“You’ve been quiet for the last couple of days,” Idris said. The pair were sitting in their office alone, and Delaney was glad for the near-solitude. Several days had passed since he’d met Grigori, and he was adjusting to the knowledge slowly.
“The whole mate thing.”
“It’s freaking you out.”
“Yeah. I mean, did you see him? Duff was right, Fate must’ve been smoking something. He does look like supermodel material.”
Idris’s expression darkened. “It doesn’t matter at all what he looks like. You want his heart, not his reflection, and you’re making it sound like you aren’t handsome, which is ridiculous.”
“I know he has to fall in love with my personality or some shit, but we still need to be attracted to each other.”
“I think this is the first time since I’ve known you that you’ve completely gotten on my nerves,” Idris retorted. “You’re attractive. Even Duff comments on it, and you guys don’t get along anymore.”
“That’s because he wants to sleep with me because all his thoughts are centered around his dick and where he can stick it next.”
“We aren’t going to sit here and have a conversation about Duff when we should be discussing your feelings regarding Grigori. I mean for Fate’s sake, your familiar’s named Greggory. It’s like somewhere in your heart, you already knew who your mate was.”
Delaney smiled at his friend. “You know, until you met Mac I had no idea what a hopeless romantic you are.”
“Yes, you did because you’re secretly one too. We’re alike. Grigori wasn’t looking at you like he had any complaints.”
“I certainly didn’t have any. His face…it’s, like, perfect.”
“How cool is it that your mate has fangs? A vampire. I didn’t even think about one for you. I’m glad I didn’t put money on it.”
“What would’ve been your guess?” Delaney asked. He remembered being a child and wanting a set of fangs of his own. If he and Grigori somehow managed to seal their bond, he’d get them. They wouldn’t be as impressive as the ones vampires had, but Fate gave their mates the ability to bite them back. It was used not only to complete their bond, but it allowed his body to produce the same hormones that caused vampires to get their supposedly deserved reputation as terrific lovers.
“I couldn’t decide. Then I thought, ‘Well, it doesn’t matter anyway, as long as he makes you happy.’ ”
“I love you, Idris.”
“I love you too. Don’t be nervous about your date tonight. You’ll have an amazing time, and you get to stare into his pale blue eyes all night long,” Idris told him, then leaned closer. “And you can imagine how good it’s going to be to have sex for the first time.”
“I can’t do that.”
Idris’s brows furrowed. “Why not?”
“I might spontaneously combust.”
They grinned at each other and started laughing, which was how Mac’s younger brother, Carter, found them when he showed up in the doorway. “Looks like I’m missing a good joke.”
“Come on in, I’m just freaking out about meeting my mate.”
“I looked him up on the computer this morning because I couldn’t take listening to you guys talk about how hot he is any longer without seeing it for myself,” Carter revealed as he dropped down onto the couch across from where the two wizards were lounging. “Man, he’s…I have no words to describe him. His whole family’s stunning.”
“I’m going to stick out like a sore thumb if they want to add me to the family photo.”
