I lean forward in my seat. “Whatever it is, I’m in.”

Pops chuckles. “I appreciate your passion, son. But never agree to a deal until you hear all the details.”

I nod, miming zipping my lips and allowing Pops to talk.

“You know the space above the west garage that I’m currently using for storage?”

I nod again, continuing to remain silent.

“Well, I’ve been thinking of clearing it out, fixing it up, and getting into the landlord business.”

My eyes are wide open and full of excitement.

“I can see the gears turnin’ in that head of yours,” Pops chuckles, and he isn’t wrong. So many ideas and possibilities are running through my mind.

“And you want me to be the one to fix it up?”

“Sure do. Paint, carpet, and new appliances. You’re in charge. And in return, I’ll allow you to live in the apartment until you graduate college. Then my plan is to rent it to one of the mechanics.”

“Pops! This is genius. Thank you! Seriously. I won’t let you down.”

“I know you won’t, son.”

I beam at him, honored to have his trust and confidence. “So, how many bedrooms and bathrooms?” I ask, eager to get started.

“Two bedrooms and one bath.”

It’s perfect.

“Can I ask Kyle to be my roommate?”

“Sure can.”

Absolutely perfect.

I can’t wait to begin, my creative juices are flowing. And even more so, I can’t wait to tell Kyle.

Things haven’t been the same since we’ve been back in Haven Creek. We haven’t messed around other than the one time in Kyle’s truck when Nelson interrupted us.

I’m hoping this will bring us closer, instill happiness back into our lives, and renew the connection we found on the road.

I miss it, and I miss Ky.

The space above the west garage isn’t exactly a white picket fence, but it would beours.

I think he could be happy.

We both could.

I’ve come to realize that a blossoming, soul-deep kind of love can grow from the seeds of friendship. And that’s exactly where I’m at right now. I’ve fully accepted that I’m in love with my best friend, and I can’t wait to tell him the good news.

It’s time to shoot my shot and ask Kyle to move in with me.

CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

KYLE

“Can’t we at least go out to dinner and talk about things?” Marissa asks for what feels like the millionth time.
