“Are you hungry, Kurse?” Faith called from the kitchen.

Kurse giggled to himself. When was he not hungry?

He roared back at her, “Who doesn’t love burned animal flesh and unborn baby birds?”

Faith did not reply. Kurse frowned and stood up, adjusting his loincloth that had come loose during the night. He stomped into the kitchen, and the smell grew stronger and even more irresistible.

“Do you not like animal flesh and unborn baby birds?” Kurse inquired.

Faith was stirring and flopping the delicious food onto a plate. She cringed at him.

“That wouldn’t be how I would describe it, but um, yes, I suppose I do.”

Kurse sat on the floor in the kitchen. He crossed his giant muscular legs and remained still. He looked like a massive meteor that had landed in Faith’s kitchen.

Faith turned off the stove and handed him the plate. He gave it a big whiff.

“Mmm, it smells delightful!” Kurse said, seconds before widening his jaw and inhaling the bacon and eggs without another breath. Faith was leaning against the kitchen counter, eating her meal by the forkful.

Kurse placed the plate down, trying his best not to shatter it. He rubbed his stomach and grinned. “Thank you very much, Faith.”

She smiled at him, and that time, it seemed like it was actually genuine. Not like she was simply tolerating him, like the times before.

She looked beautiful in the morning sunlight. Her outfit was a baby blue blazer with a black blouse and grey slacks. Her hair was up in a bun, so there was more space for him to admire the flesh of her bare neck.

Kurse tried not to stare, but with Faith, it was difficult. She noticed him looking, and he turned away, fisting the plate and handing it back to her.

“Thank you again,” Kurse muttered.

“You’re very welcome. Now,” Faith began as she placed the plates into the sink. “I’ve got to go to work today, so you’re going to be on your own. Do you think you’ll be okay?”

Kurse wasn’t honestly sure about what it meant to be okay. He was there to acquire his fated mate, but she seemed to have other plans. But he also didn’t want to make her more angry than he already had.

He nodded. “I won’t eat or destroy anything if that’s what you’re saying.”

Faith laughed. The sound was melodious and charming.

“Yes, that is exactly what I mean. There’s food in the fridge, but if you want it not to be cold, just put it in this.”

Faith turned to point at what looked like a mini-oven. She popped it open and pressed a few buttons, lighting up the console with neon numbers and letters.

“Press this one, and it’ll make your food warm. Then you can eat it, okay?”

Kurse nodded, absorbing most of what she had instructed him. He was, however, mainly interested in that cold liquid she had handed him yesterday.

Kurse sat in the kitchen as Faith picked up her purse and keys. She opened the door to leave, then paused for a moment.

“I don’t think you should leave here yet unless there’s a real danger, okay? No one expects to see someone your size.”

Kurse glanced down at his stomach. Faith laughed.

“No, I mean your height. You’re very tall. It can scare some people here.”

“Everyone is over 7 feet in Kortanth. I would be considered small there.”

Kurse watched as Faith smiled once more, closing the door behind her. There was a clank, which meant she had locked the door. Kurse sighed and stood up, since he was able to narrowly avoid the ceiling.

The flesh and unborn birds tasted great, but he required far more sustenance than the average human. He gently placed two fingernails on the handle of the door where Faith had previously acquired the container of wonders. Behind it was a freezing cold section, but with two similar looking boxes as the night before.
