I hold up my hand to show her the ring. “Tristan and I are going to get married, and I’m moving out to Wyoming. I wanted to talk to you about the chance to stay on remotely. I really enjoy working for this firm, and I have learned a lot in the past year here. I understand if this is not something you will allow, but I didn’t want to leave without asking.”
She sits and studies me as she contemplates her response. “Lana, are you happy? Does he make you happy?” I smile and nod in response. “Good. I’m glad to see you took my conversation to heart.”
“I did. This feels right. He was put back in my path for a reason. I need to be able to explore this with him.”
She nods, and a sweet smile graces her lips. “I’m glad. Now, about you working remotely.” I hold my breath, waiting for her to give me her final decision. “What are the chances you could fly out here once a month for a few days, just to have some presence in the office?”
I can hardly contain my excitement. I want to pump my fists in the airBreakfast Clubstyle, but I bite the inside of my cheek and smile wide. “I’m sure I could make that work.”
“Perfect. Then I don’t see why this can’t work. You have a lot of people who are contacting us to work with you directly. You’ll have first pick of the projects and where they’re located.”
She continues to talk, but I don’t hear any of it. I am too excited about the fact that everything seems to be coming together for us. I’ll move out there, oversee the cabin project, get married, have a baby, and live happily ever after.
Right?
God, I really hope I’m making the right choice. Everything is happening so fast that I feel I’m not in control of it. What I really need is to go home and sort everything out with my landlord, and with Tristan. Please, let the rest of the day go by fast.
Chapter 24
Tristan - Six Months Later
Icarry the last of her boxes into my apartment, and as I look around, I know we need to find something bigger. Our baby will be here in a month, and this one-bedroom apartment is way too small. I didn’t want to go looking for a place without her. I have some money in savings, and my plan is to go house shopping with her. He or she is going to need room to run around.
Lana decided she wanted to finish out her prenatal care in Boston, and it’s been hard on us but so worth it. She’s out here this week to do a final walk-through of the cabins. She will then return home until she has the baby and then move out this way. She’s been sending stuff over a little at a time, and she is down to bare minimums. It’s so exciting. I can’t wait until she’s here full time. This distance thing is torture.
“Babe, I was thinking, would you want to look for a bigger place this week?”
She takes a deep breath, her round stomach sticking out in the most adorable manner. “Sure.” She struggles to stand from her spot on the couch, and when I try to help her, she swats my hand away. “I’m a strong, independent woman,” she teases.
“Yes, you are, but I want to spoil you, so let me. I haven’t seen you in a month, and I’ve missed you.” She stands in front of me, her belly pressing into me as she stands on her tip-toes and kisses me.God, I’ve missed these kisses.Three more months and she will be out here with me for good. Three more months until we can be a full-time family.
We set a wedding date for next year, so the baby will be about a year old and can be either the flower girl or ring bearer. We haven’t found out what we’re having yet. She wants it to be a surprise, and it’s driving me insane. Every time I mention calling the doctor to find out, she gets this twinkle in her eye. She’s up to something, but I don’t know what it is.
The ride to the ranch takes longer than it should because some of the dirt road has potholes, and I don’t want to jostle her too much. I did promise to take her out into the field to see the horses today after she does her final check-in and signs off on it all.
She slides out of the truck, and my mom comes out the front door to greet us with a large smile and hug for Lana.
“Lana, honey, you look great. So happy to have you back here,” she says, kissing her on the cheek.
“Hi, Liz, it’s good to be home.”
Home. That’s the first time I’ve heard her say it, and as if she knew, she turns to look at me. The smile on my face matches hers—large and full of love.
I can’t wait to have her any longer. “Lana, why don’t we take a walk to see the cabins?”
She talks with mom for a few more minutes before we start in the direction of the new building, but I don’t stop. I keep pulling her with me until we reach cabin seven. Her eyes sparkle, and she sees the mischief behind mine. She knows what I’m up to; she doesn’t even have to ask. I push open the door to the cabin and lock it behind me.
She walks in the direction of the bedroom she slept in when she stayed all those years ago, pulling her shirt over her head as she goes. She looks so fucking beautiful with her stomach round, carrying my child. I follow her into the room just as she kicks her shoes off and is undoing her shorts.
“We gotta make this fast. I want to finish with the project so we can spend more time together,” she says as she crawls on the bed on her hands and knees.
I strip down as fast as I can and press into her from behind. She pushes back on me, taking me all the way in.
“Oh, God,” she moans.
I slap her ass, and she starts moving as I reach my hand around her to play with her clit. She bucks under my touch, and it’s not long before she is breathing heavy and panting for more.
“Come on, baby. Beg for it,” I urge, pressing a little harder.
