He walks into the bedroom, gathers his shirt and shoes, and takes off with his luggage, slamming the door closed behind him. The one man I truly love and need in my life just walked out on me because my ex is a psycho.

I try to call Ben to get this resolved, but he doesn’t answer. I don’t know what to do but crumble into a heap on the floor and cry.

Chapter 31

It was a mistake.Saying I love you was a mistake. Clearly, I’m not worthy of Sam’s love because she took it back. I’ve had women throw that small phrase at me in the throes of passion before, but never once have I felt the urge to say it back and actuallymeanit. This girl had me wrapped around her little finger, and she didn’t even realize it.

I’m in the Uber on the way to my apartment so I can drink myself into a stupor and try to forget about her beautiful brown eyes and her perfect body, or the way she moans when I fill her.Ugh! I can’t even be mad at her properly.I put headphones in my ears to drown out the world around me. I listen to some music, and before long, the driver pulls up in front of my apartment.

The doorman, Stanley, helps me take my bag out of the trunk and opens the door for me, smiling.

“Welcome home, Mr. Flanigan. How was filming?”

He’s a nice old man; he means well. “It was good, thanks. Glad to be back and in my own bed tonight.”

“Yes. My granddaughter showed me pictures of you and your girlfriend. Lovely thing. Shall I be adding her to the approved list of guests?”

“No.” My tone leaves no room for discussion. He nods and I take the elevator to my apartment.

I drop down on my couch and stare out the large picture windows. I need to call Emily and let her know how wrong she is about her friend. I find her name in my contacts and call her.

“Hey, Tait. How did last night go? Did you two make up?”

“She told me she loves me and then told me it was a mistake and kicked me out. What the fuck am I supposed to do with that, Em?”

“She what?” she yells into the phone, surprised.

“She told me she loves me. I told her I love her, and then she kicked me out. Said some shit about it being a mistake then asked me to leave. She was drunk as an arse last night so we didn’t do anything, but she seemed so happy to have me there. This morning though, it was something else. How did it end so badly?”

“That doesn’t sound like Sam. She doesn’t go around telling random guys she loves them just for fun. If she said it, she was serious. There has to be more to it than that. Tell me everything about your relationship—minus the sex part. I don’t need to hear about that. Just everything else. Maybe I can figure out what happened.”

I start at the beginning and tell her about our first night and the conversation we had, how I learned the type of girl she is. I then told her about my brilliant idea of creating a contract to protect Sam so she could sleep with me and it was to protect her. Emily, for the record, also thought I was an arse to create that and have her sign it. I finish by telling her how after Quinn was roofied, everything changed, and she left the next day and wouldn’t talk to me.

“Wow. That’s a lot that’s happened between you guys.” She sighs and continues. “That’s not Sam though. Something is going on that she doesn’t want to tell you. She likes to take care of stuff herself and doesn’t like to bother others. You said someone came to the door this morning?”

“Yeah, after that is when she kicked me out.”

“Male or female?”

I think back. I couldn’t hear the voices that well. “I think it was a male voice with hers. I couldn’t really tell because they kept their voices down.”

“Hang in there, Tait. Let me go home and talk with Sam. I’ll figure out what’s going on.”

“Thanks, Em. I owe you.”

“Oh, I think the bill you’re going to receive from the Ritz will be payment enough. The champagne and the lobster were delicious, by the way.”

I smirk. This is just like Emily. “You figure out how I can fix this, and I’ll fly to you France to have it from the source if you want.”

“I’ll hold you to that. Bye, Tait.”

We hang up, and I decide to put my stuff away and put drinking on hold for the time being. I feel better after speaking with Emily, and I’m glad I have her to try to talk to Sam. I just hope she was lying about not loving me. I lie down on my bed and pass out from exhaustion.

The lightfrom my phone is flashing in my eyes and I look around. The room is dark, the sun almost completely set. I slept the entire day away. I look at the new text from Rory.

Rory:What the fuck is this?
