It must have been awful for Hannah not to have that last goodbye in peace. I promised we’d catch up after our holiday.
We took a private flight to Greece and then a boat to Crete. I’d never been to Crete and was excited to see the island. A car waited for us, and I welcomed the cool air conditioning. Jacob appeared to know the driver and I wondered if he was another ex-serviceman, he certainly looked the part with his muscled shoulders and buzz cut.
“Wow,” was all I could manage as we climbed a hill and I saw a magnificent villa ahead.
Jacob chuckled. “It’s a replica, although smaller, of my home in England,” he said.
I looked ahead at the glass and stone building, the sun reflecting off white render making it sparkle. We rounded a corner and a set of electronic gates opened. We drove through a tunnel of trees until it opened into a large car parking area. The driver continued to the side of the building and under a carport. I waited for my door to be opened, still marvelling at the house and the view.
Jacob led the way to a ginormous front door. He keyed in a code, and it clicked open, thankfully, it seemed to glide effortlessly. I’d hate to have to push it open myself. The driver followed with our bags, leaving them in the vast marble hall. The waft of lilies washed over me, causing my nose to wrinkle and a sneeze to build. I loved the smell, but they did irritate. I chuckled.
Leaving our bags, Jacob led me through the house and out to a terrace and infinity pool. The view was to die for! Rolling hills sloped down to the sea. There were a few buildings dotted around but nothing that restricted the view. The sea was a glorious blue and I spotted sailboats and yachts in the distance.
“I own all the land from here down to the sea,” Jacob said, standing beside me.
“Where are yousettled?” I asked, and he stared at me.
“Wherever you are,” he replied, nuzzling the side of my neck. “Get naked.”
I turned to face him. “Is that a demand?” I asked, kissing his neck in return.
“Yes, and I’m impatient,” he said, pulling my dress over my head. I unclipped my bra and slipped out of my panties. I dove in, waiting for him to join me.
I watched him strip, smiling at the sight of his naked body. He dove in, surfacing behind me. He pulled me to his chest and nipped my shoulder.
“I can’t believe I’m going to be a father,” he said, kissing my skin.
“I think you’re going to be an amazing father,” I replied, believing it to be true.
He chuckled. “You have more faith in me than I do.”
I turned in his arms and hooked my legs around his waist. My body wasn’t as flush against his as I’d have liked.
“Are you worried about anything?” I asked, wrapping my arms around his neck.
“Everything. I know you just fainted, but it scared me,” he said.
“And maybe rushing me off to hospital was a little overkill?”
“No. I’ll do the same if it happens again.” He smiled at me.
“Women have been getting pregnant for millennia,” I said, laughing.
“Not mine,” he said in return.
“Wasn’t...” I thought Nathan had told me his sister was pregnant when she was killed, but I didn’t want to finish the sentence for fear of upsetting Jacob.
“Yes, but...” he said, not finishing his sentence.
I stared at him, at the pain that flashed through his eyes and his furrowed brow.
“I’m sorry,” I said, not knowing what more I could add to ease that pain.
“Long time ago.”
That seemed to be a stock answer for him, and Nathan, and I presumed, being ex-military, they would have the ability toparkbad memories, disassociate from them.
We floated around for a little while comfortable in our silence.
