“Most of my meetings are via Zoom,” he explained. “Sometimes, I can have multiple meetings with individuals who aren’t aware others arein the room.”

His desk had two laptops, both top of range Macs by the looks of them. And nothing else. Not a piece of paper or a pen in sight.

“You’re very organised,” I said with a touch of envy. I chuckled. “My desk is chaotic.”

“I know, that would drive me nuts.”

He headed to another door. “You’ll need a code to get in here, if you ever needed to,” he said quietly.

“No good to me if I can’t get into this room to start with,” I replied, a little perplexed.

He chuckled. “Of course, I’ll give you a code for this room as well.”

When the door automatically swung open rather fast, I understood. I was looking into a safe room, and it unnerved me. There was a beeping.

“You have ten seconds to get in before the door closes again,” he said, pushing me forwards.

I stepped into a large room with no windows but surprisingly bright. It seemed the lighting was the ‘daylight’ type. There were two other doors to one side. The room had a small kitchenette, two monitors on the wall with a telephone next to them. Beside that was a large torch, a hammer, a machete, and a small axe. I didn’t want to think what they were for. All were behind glass with a ‘smash here’ sticker. I did chuckle at the very small hammer hanging from a chain beside it.

“There is enough food in here for two weeks. The electricity, communication systems, drainage, water, etc, is all on a separate system from the house so can’t be cut off. There is a shower room and bedroom. I’ve kitted the bedroom out with a cot, but you might want to add whatever should be in here.”

I didn’t answer. The thought I had to kit out a safe room for my baby terrified me.

“I think I’d like to leave this room,” I said quietly.

He placed his palm on the side of my face and nodded. I shivered at his touch, and the coolness in the room, realising it probably had an air filtration system as well.

The door automatically closed behind us, and we continued our tour.

Upstairs, there were eight bedrooms, all en-suite. Five of which were unfurnished. Jacob explained that he just hadn’t gotten round to them as they weren’t used. I did ask who used the other three and he laughed.

“Staff, sometimes, colleagues, Nathan. And now our child.”

As he opened the door next to his bedroom, I took a sharp breath in. “This is my real surprise,” he whispered. His voice quivered as if nerves had overtaken him.

I clasped my hands over my mouth as I walked into the nursery. It was simple and beautiful. The walls were an off-white and one had an amazing rainbow that crossed a field with various farm animals. I touched it, it had been hand-painted. The cot was set up under one of the windows, white muslin covered the glass. The carpet was plush, and I kicked off my shoes to feel the pile under my bare feet. I walked around, running my hand over the changing table, the dressing table, and the wardrobe doors. I opened another door and stepped into the most perfect bathroom. A small bath, a sink that could automatically be lowered or raised as our child grew. A low-level toilet with a step around it completed the room.

Back in the bedroom, in one corner sat the largest teddy bear I’d ever seen. I guessed, if I could stand it, it would be taller than my five-feet-six-inch frame. Harrods was embroidered on one paw. Beside it was a giraffe, probably six feet tall, a floppy dog, smiling pink pig, and a lion completed the menagerie of soft toy pets.

A soft white leather nursing chair faced another window, and the view was the same as my new office downstairs.

I opened one wardrobe door, it had been filled with clothes, nappies, wipes. The items were for all age ranges and every one was gorgeous, exactly the kind of items I would have purchased myself.

“You’re good at this daddy thing,” I said as tears filled my eyes.

“I hope so.” He stepped closer and wrapped his arms around me. “I hope I get to do it more than just as a weekend dad,” he added quietly. “Do you like it?” Again, I detected that nervous lilt to his voice.

I turned in his arms. “I love it. It’s perfect and exactly what I would have wanted.”

He leaned down to kiss me. That kiss started off gentle until I didn’t want ‘gentle’ anymore. I fisted his hair, dragged in air through my nose, and pushed myself closer to him.

I needed him, desperately. I lowered myself, dragging him down with me. He chuckled into my mouth. Once I was on the floor and he hovered above me, I wrestled my skirt to my waist and dragged down my knickers. He continued to kiss me while I unzipped his trousers.

I groaned in frustration as I realised, for once, he was wearing boxers. He chuckled again, nipping at my tongue and lips. With one arm holding him above me, he pushed his trousers and shorts down and I grabbed his cock with both hands. I palmed his balls, rolling them while I guided him inside me. I sighed as I did.

Jacob being inside me was the most natural feeling in the world. A feeling of belonging, of connecting, of... My chest constricted and my heart raced. I placed my hands either side of his face and pulled his head back, ending our kiss. I needed to tell him something.

“I love you,” I whispered, and he stilled.
