He shook his head and chuckled as he left the car to open the rear door. By the time I’d gotten out, Jacob was on the doorstep. He held a tea towel.

“I mean it,” I said, wrapping my arms around Nathan’s waist.

“I know you do.” He kissed the top of my head.

“Dinner?” Jacob asked Nathan. “There’s plenty.”

“Nah, my friend,” Nathan sighed. “I’m going to wallow in my self-pity for an hour or so, then catch up with the soaps.”

“You don’t watch television,” I said, pulling away from him.

“Maybe I’ll start. Have a good night and I’ll see you tomorrow. Let me know how you get on at the hospital.”

He left with just a wave over his shoulder. I moved to the doorstep and Jacob wrapped an arm around my shoulders. We stood watching the car drive out of sight.

“I’m worried about him. He and Jules had athinggoing on,” I said.

“Call him, see if you can persuade him to return.”

We walked inside the house. “I already tried that. I offered for him to stay but he didn’t want to.”

“I hope that’s not because I’m here,” Jacob said.

“No, I think he genuinely wants to be on his own. He does that, hides away when he needs to.”

“How are you?” Jacob asked, turning me to face him. His hands rested on my upper arms.

“Okay, hoarse from all the calls, and sad, of course.”

“Go and have a bath, or a shower. I have a nice cold white wine, I’m sure you can have one glass, and dinner will be ready in a half hour.”

Whatever it was he had cooked smelled delicious. I headed upstairs, aware my feet and legs felt heavy. They were starting to swell, even though I wasn’t on them for any real length of time.

I was lounging in the bath when Jacob came into the bathroom. “Here,” he said, handing me a cool glass of something. I took a sip.

“That’s nice,” I said, taking another.

“A fake mojito,” he said. “Mint, lime, and soda, basically.”

He sat on the edge of the bath and looked at me. “Pregnancy suits you. Maybe we should do it again after this one.”

“We haven’t quite gotten over the fact or made any plans about this one yet,” I replied, chuckling.

“Yeah, I guess we ought to. Perhaps we’ll sit with my lawyers after the scan tomorrow?”

“Or my lawyers,” I replied, raising an eyebrow at him.

“Both, then. Do you think we could get them in the same room at the same time, or will they all want to double the fee for double the unnecessary appointments?” Jacob laughed and I joined in.

“Let’s get the scan out of the way, and then let’s us decide before involving the vultures, shall we?”

It hadn’t offended me that he had wanted his lawyers involved, he was a very wealthy man, judging by his car, houses, and helicopter rides. I had wealth, but not to his degree so it was only right that we protected ourselves and set out a legal plan for our child. But we hadn’t discussed anything ourselves.

I handed him my drink and stood, sloshing water over the side of the bath and onto his bare feet. If I ever had a foot fetish, his would be my drug. He looked good barefoot in jeans and a white polo shirt. He looked even better with the obvious bulge at his crotch.

“Are you enjoying the view?” I asked, standing in all my naked glory.

“Oh, yes. I didn’t think I could get more turned on by you, but that stomach of yours is going to be sorely missed.”
