Summer
“I have to go, D-J. Please, take me to him,” Isaid.
My body shook and I struggled to breathe as panic welled up inme.
“No, Summer. Dexter said to take youhome.”
“I have to know what he was doing, damnit!”
“You know what he was doing, you sawhim.”
I spun in my seat and glared at him. “I know what I saw; I need him to fucking explain himself.” My voice rose to screechingpoint.
I felt sick. Sick to my stomach at the sight I’d witnessed. I’d watched the man I love about to fuck another, but it wasn’t him—it couldn’t be. There was no emotion on his face as he held the man I’d seen in the bar, down on the hood of a car. There was no struggle from the man, he was a willing partner, in fact, I’d seen him smile. The sick fuck had smiled at me. Jackson had lied to me; I’d asked him if he knew the guy and he’dlied.
I watched D-J sigh and his shoulders sag. He slowed the car from the breakneck speed to just fast. I also saw a tear roll down hischeek.
“I don’t know what to do. I’ve never seen him like that,” hewhispered.
“Take me back to him, please,” I said, gently.
He didn’t answer immediately, and I was thankful for the seat belt as he pulled a U-turn worthy of a stuntdriver.
“I just need to know he’s all right, then you can take me back, okay? I need to leave, I need to go home, myhome.”
He nodded and didn’t speak to me until we pulled up outside thebar.
“I don’t know if Dexter will even let you in. Be prepared forthat.”
“I will, now open the door,” I said, urgency laced myvoice.
He fumbled with the key until eventually I took it from his shaking hands. Whatever he had taken, and it was obvious he was on something; it was making him very clumsy. His pupils were dilated, he constantly licked his lips as if his mouth was very dry, and he was trying to conjure up saliva. He was edgy, nervous, and it was as we came face-to-face with Dexter I understoodwhy.
“Get the fuck in there,” he said to him, pointing behind thebar.
I watched him walk away. “How is he?” I asked as I made to follow D-J.
“Not good, I don’t want you in there, rightnow.”
“I need to see him, I need to ask him one fucking question, and then I’llleave.”
“He has no idea what he’s done right now. What he does know is Honey died a half hour ago. I got a call from an old friend at the hospital. He believes he caused that. Right now, I’m allowing him an outlet, then I’ll sedatehim.”
“What? Whoa, no. Hold on…You’re allowing him to do what? Cut or fuck a man?” My breathing was erratic. “How could you have not told me, Dex? That’s his other outlet, isn’t it?” I spat the words athim.
“He cut. It was that or beat him unconscious, which I did earlier aswell.”
“He needs to be in hospital,Dexter.”
“He can’t afford to be in the hospital, Summer,” he over pronounced myname.
“He must have insurance, doesn’the?”
Dexter shook his head. “There must be a free service here?” Iasked.
Again, Dexter shook his head. “I have money, how much are we talking abouthere?”
