“I’m not so sure he’s as eager to leave as he was initially,” hesaid.

“Why do you thinkthat?”

“He hasn’t said anything directly, but I know he thinks Gabriella isn’t as excited to return home. She’ll always have a place in my business, but here she has more of a free rein. I’m not so convinced she wants to work underAlex.”

“I guess it’s a role reversal for her and she might find that hard. Has she said anything directly?” Iasked.

“No, but I thought I might take her to dinner one evening next week and see if she’ll speak openly about themove.”

“I think you should and sooner would be better. She has plans for this wedding in three weeks, and now I’m wondering if she waited until now to delay the move. Would she dothat?”

“She’s not one to connive. I don’t know, though. I guess we’ll have to wait andsee.”

“What will you do if he changes his mind?” I asked, as the implication for both Mackenzie and my job settled overme.

“I don’t think he would, he’s not that unprofessional. He’d go until I could organise something else. I have other businesses he can be involved in here in the UK, if it comes to it. Anyway, enough of all that talk.” Mackenzie pulled my legs onto his lap and massaged my feet. I lay back against the arm of the sofa and enjoyed histouch.
