“That hardly seems fair to your brothers,” I point out but secretly, I’m dying with laughter inside. She’s never been afraid to speak her mind. When she met Dame, she didn’t just get one guy to fall for her—my entire family did.

“Still. You were gone so long. I miss you.”

“I’ve missed you, too, Jules. I promise we’ll spend time together soon.”

“Okay… here’s Dad. I need to go find those cards for the boys.”

When Damien gets back on the phone, I ask the question that struck while talking with Jules. “Do you think it would be weird to get tickets for Teagan and Connor to come to the game? They’re huge fans, and it would make his day to possibly meet some of the players. But our family is huge, and it could be overwhelming.”

“Only you can answer that. You know how we are—the more the merrier, but we could also scare the pants right off her and send her running in the other direction with our brood. But—Mom and Dad are still traveling in Greece this week, so we do have two extra tickets. Just food for thought.”

“Hmmm…. I’ll have to think about it.”

One more day…

I’ve just tuckedConnor into bed, and I’m tinkering in the kitchen, cleaning up from dinner when a text comes through.

Swiping open my phone, I’m confused when I see a picture of the Renegades stadium. But my mouth drops when I read the caption to the text.

Davis: Can I take you and Connor to the game next weekend?

Immediately, I press the call button instead of responding. This is too important to text about. The moment he answers, I say, “Are you freaking kidding me?”

“Well, hi to you, too! How was your day?”

“Really? That’s what you’re opening with?” It’s like he doesn’t comprehend my level of excitement.

Amused, he asks, “What?”

“You just invited Connor and me to a Rainier Renegades game, like it isn’t a big deal. You know we’re huge fans.”

“Uh… to be honest, it isn’t that big of a deal.”

What? Why does he sound apprehensive? He should be excited for this. I know I am. His voice seems off, so I quickly suggest, “Can we video chat?”

I don’t even give him a chance before I hang up and press the video option.

Once again, he’s laughing when the call picks up. He’s clean shaven and still wearing his shirt and tie from work. “What’s going on, T? Talk to me.”

“Why don’t you think it’s a big deal?”

Cringing, he says, “I’ve told you about Luke, right? You know—Dani’s husband.”

“Yeah, you’ve mentioned they live between Anderson Island and Tacoma, and they have two kids, why?”

“I, uh… shit. I guess I’ve never mentioned why my family and I often go to the games, have I?”

“I know you’re huge fans and have season tickets, but what does that have to do with Luke?”

“My sister’s married to Luke Leighton, the Renegades head coach. I… uh… guess I forgot that part.”

“What the actual frickity frack are you talking about? How could you not tell me?” Thinking back through our conversations, even from our very first day, he’s always just said he was a big fan of Rainier. But wait… that first day… he had used the words,he had to be… Now, it makes sense.

“It never came up. I just kinda forgot you didn’t know.”

“Any other famous people in your family you’ve forgotten to mention?”

Davis runs a hand down his face and cringes again. “That depends.”
