As soon as Connor’s settled, Davis pats him on his good shoulder. “I’ll meet you in the exam room, and we’ll look at the picture of your arm together.”
Davis nods once in my direction and takes off with a chart in his hands.
I walk with Carol and Connor to x-ray. There’s one person ahead of him, so Miss Carol suggests, “You’re welcome to wait for us in the exam room. It’s the second door on the right.”
When another person passes us in the narrow hall, I realize there isn’t a lot of room for me here, and I’m basically just in the way. Leaning down, I kiss the top of Connor’s head. “I’ll see you in a few minutes, sweet boy. You be good for Miss Carol.”
“Don’t you worry.” She looks conspiratorially to Connor. “I won’t pop too many wheelies on the way back,” which causes him to giggle adorably.
The x-ray room door opens, and a patient and a nurse exit.
“We’re up, Connor. Are you ready to find out if your bones are healing?”
And that’s my cue to leave.
I’m not nearly as emotional as I was before, but it’s not easy putting on a brave face for Connor. It’ll be good to just take a moment to myself while I wait for Connor to return. The door to the exam room is cracked open. When I walk in, I’m surprised to find I’m not alone.
Davis leans against the counter. His long legs stretch out with one crossed over while his arms cross over his broad chest. His sexy lips lift in a smile as he watches me enter. Just one look has my heart fluttering out of control.
“I hope you don’t mind, but I thought we could talk while we wait for Connor to return.”
This can go one of two ways and with his unreadable expression, I’m not sure which way. Part of me wants to walk right into his arms, the other—bolt out the door.
Instead, I do neither and find myself standing just inside the door saying, “That’s fine.”
His voice is low when he takes a step closer to me and shuts the door behind me.
As much as I wish he’d touch me, he doesn’t. But the look in his eyes tell me he wants to. Taking a long breath, Davis sighs heavily. “God, why does it feel like forever since I’ve last seen you? These have been the longest four weeks of my life—I swear.”
“Same,” I whisper.
I want to reach for him, but when he stuffs his hands into his pockets, I think better of it.
He looks to the floor briefly, then back to my eyes. “I’ll never be anything less than honest with you, Teagan.”
“Okay,” I draw out, wondering where he’s going with this.
“I haven’t stopped thinking about you, and I’d really like to see you again.”
“Same.”
Great, now I sound like I can only say one syllable responses.
Reaching out, he caresses my cheek as he brushes a loose strand of hair behind my ear. Then he shakes his head and sighs. “But I can’t do anything because Connor’s my patient. His surgery was pretty intensive, and I’d prefer not to hand this case over to anyone else. Not only is he your child, but I want to make damn certain I’ve done everything I can for him as my patient.”
I want what’s best for my son, but my heart sinks at the thought of not being able to see Davis again.
“With me just starting at this hospital, I can’t cross any lines—not that I would otherwise. But our situation is unique.”
“Yes, it is,” I agree.
Neither of us say anything as we stare into each other’s eyes for a long minute.
Eventually, he clears his throat and asks, “Can I make you a deal?”
“What’s that?” I counter.
What could he possibly want?
