“So what… Am I supposed to tell Enzo when he walks in here, ‘Dude, your wife’s water broke and I’m the ass that made her sit in an uncomfortable chair?’ I don’t think so.”

“Your water broke?” comes from the voice I’ve been craving to hear all day.

I turn to the door of the lounge we’ve been camping out in and see the sexiest man alive in the doorway. His face is a mixture of awe, wonderment, and shock. My heart melts.

Enzo

It’s been a shit day.Anything that could have gone wrong, has. I’ve been flying for the past nine hours straight after getting shot at and having to rendezvous at another location. I’m dead on my feet and just want to crawl into bed next to Samantha and forget about this entire day.

Apparently, life has other plans.

As I round the corner to the lounge I was told my family is waiting for me, I hear Riggs’ deep voice. “Do you want me to call an ambulance?” This has me picking up the pace to see what’s going on. His tone is serious and a bit eerie. By the time I get to the door, I can tell Samantha’s okay because she’s arguing with him over sitting.

Just as I’m about to enter, the words, “Dude, your wife’s water broke,” register and I take in their full meaning.Holy shit! She’s going into labor?

Needing to clarify, I ask in disbelief, “Your water broke?”

The minute Samantha turns, her rich, mahogany eyes lock onto mine. I can see her visibly relax, just by my presence alone. I absolutely love having this effect on her.

I close the distance between us in mere strides. I wrap my arms around her and bring her in for a hug. When I pull back, she pulls in her lower lip and suddenly looks sheepish. “Yes. Just a few minutes ago.”

“Have you been having contractions?” Ma interrupts.Thank God, she is thinking clearly. I’m stuck on being near Samantha again.

“I don’t think so. There’s been some pressure in my back, but lately, that’s a daily occurrence.”

“Have you called the on-call-doctor to find out what you should do?” I finally get my wits about me.

She shakes her head, but before she can respond, Riggs cuts in with a pointed look to Samantha, “She was just about to do that.”

Samantha lets out an exasperated huff. “Great. Now we’re all standing in this mess. Is there a way we could get some towels to clean this up so we don’t continue to traipse through this everywhere?”

“Why don’t we focus on the doctor, beautiful,” I say, hoping to find out what to do next.

Samantha points to her purse next to the side of the couch that is clear from any liquids. “My phone’s right there.”

Pops is quicker than I can blink because he reaches out and hands it to us from a distance. I grab hold of the purse and open it for her. She reaches in and immediately calls the on-call doctor. After being on hold for what seems like an eternity, she talks to someone. The room waits on pins and needles for direction.

“Okay… Yes… No, not yet… Of course. I will see you when we get there… Okay. See you then.”

She puts her phone back in her purse and a huge smile crosses her face. “Time to go to the hospital.”

I’m instantly filled with about ten thousand emotions at once. I can’t wait to get my family to the hospital, so I can guarantee they’re safe. I’m just about to swoop them all off, until I look down at my dirt-sodden clothes. There’s no way I can go like this. “Is there any way I can grab a quick shower?” I look to Samantha to judge her response first. “I promise, we will be on the road in ten. Sooner, most likely.”

“Go ahead. Since I’m not in active labor, the nurse I spoke with told me to take my time and safely arrive when I can.” She may have just had her water broke, but she’s remaining calm and level headed. How does she do this?

I quickly pull her to me and plant a kiss on her lips. “I’ll be back before you know it.” Not wanting to waste any time, I look over to my parents. “Do you think you can walk her to our vehicle and I’ll meet you out front?”

“We sure will, son.” Pops smiles. “You look worse than what the cat dragged in. Get out of here and change. I want to meet my grandbabies.” I hug him and Ma on my way out the door before he scolds me with, “Get movin’, son.”

We finally arrive at the hospital forty minutes later. Of course, Samantha put up a fight about riding in our new vehicle and ruining the seats, so I had to get plastic bags for her to sit on. Ma and Pops meet us at the labor and delivery entrance and we register at the nurses’ station. Samantha keeps mentioning that she’s not ready for this and all the things that are still on her list of things to do, but me being the smartass I am, just keeps telling her, “Samantha, our kids obviously don’t care about the schedule. They’re just ready for the world.”

Once we’re assigned to a room, Samantha’s asked to change into a hospital gown. She asks if she can shower off the gunk and the kind nurse, by the name of Kate, offers to assist her. I pace the small space between the hospital bed and what looks like the couch I’ll be sleeping on at some point. I hope to hell these babies make their entrance safely. The possibilities of unforeseen circumstances run through my mind. Thankfully, Samantha’s into the room before my horrific imagination gets the best of me.

They hook her up to an IV and have monitors on her within minutes. The doctor comes in and greets the two of us. “I’m Dr. Allison. What seems to bring you in tonight?” Her warm smile and confidence puts me at ease. I reach out to Samantha’s hand to find her muscles relax, too.

“Uh…” Samantha says as she sits up to shake her hand. “My water broke.”
