“Well, last night, Frankie wanted Enzo to keep reading way after bedtime. It wasn’t a big deal, but he had to firmly put her in her place, to let her know it was time for bed. I almost died laughing when he came to tell me her quivering lip almost worked on him. He had stayed firm for her sake, but once we were alone in bed, he was second-guessing himself.”

“Did you tell him, welcome to the joys of parenthood?”

“Something along those lines.”

“Well, it’ll get easier for him in time. Just wait until you have two more to tend to. You guys are gonna have your hands full… How does he like his new job? Didn’t he start yesterday?”

“He said most of yesterday was just training at their headquarters. I think he likes it, but he hasn’t had to fly anywhere yet. The guys he works with are pretty funny and like to give each other a hard time. Apparently, he’s worked with many of them before, so he’s not the new guy, so to speak.”

Lexi finishes her coffee and places her mug on my desk. “Will he travel with them often?”

I let out a deep breath to face reality. “It’s a possibility. But most of what he’ll do will have him home within a couple of days.”

“If you ever need anything, you know where to find me.” She stands and picks up her cup. “I’d better get to work if I’m going to meet with Abigail for her next book on time.”

“Thanks, Lex. I’ll see you this afternoon.”

When she leaves, I send a quick text to Enzo.

Me: Hope your day is going good. Miss you.

His reply is almost instant and brings a smile to my face.

Enzo: Miss you, too. Wish we were still on our honeymoon. Adulting has lots of disadvantages.

Me: Welcome to reality, sweetheart. See you when you get home. XOXO

Enzo: Should be home for dinner. Want me to pick something up?

Me: Sounds good. Maddie asked to have Soren for dinner. Make sure you get enough for him, but not so much that we’ll be eating it for the next week.

Enzo: Ha. I only made that mistake once. How does Thai sound?

The man knows my weakness. My mouth waters at the sheer thought.

Me: Delicious. See you tonight. Love you.

Enzo: Love you. Now let me get back to work. ?

I force myself to stop thinking about Enzo and get some work done. With all the time off I’ve taken lately, I have plenty to catch up on. I spend the day on the telephone, touching base with clients. I even manage to read through most of a manuscript. By the time I leave to pick up Declan and Frankie from school to take them to ballet and soccer, I feel like I’ve got a handle on things.

Frankie and I pull into our driveway just as an unfamiliar vehicle does.

“Who’s that, Mama?” Frankie asks as she hesitates to get out of the car.

“Not sure, honey. Let’s find out.” I leave everything in my SUV, but my keys and phone, should I need it.

By the time we get out, we see it’s Enzo. What in the world has he done now?

“So… What do you think?” He gestures to the shiny silver SUV behind him. It’s far bigger than mine, but still beautiful. As I take in the vehicle, I see it’s a Toyota Sequoia, with dealer plates.

“Is it ours?” Frankie jumps up and down with excitement.

I notice he doesn’t answer, but Enzo walks over and opens the passenger door. “Come on, let’s go for a ride.”

I have to step up onto the running boards to get into the luxurious vehicle. The seats are a soft-gray leather and it smells new. I easily relax into the seat as I watch Enzo walk around to the driver’s side.Damn, I will never get tired of looking at his sexy body.He opens the door, meets my eyes, and gives me a knowing smirk.Crap. Caught again.

Frankie chatters a mile a minute about all the features she sees in this vehicle that our other car doesn’t have, as Enzo pulls out of the driveway. He reaches for my hand but lets her continue. We pull out of the driveway and head toward the main highway. I learn how many cupholders, seat recliners, seat heaters as well as about a thousand other features Frankie finds in the vehicle as we drive down the road.
