Braid laughed. “At least he’s not fawning over that Auger bitch.”
“Fallon?” Red scoffed. “She won’t last the month. Besides, if my Kaydikins recruits more people for his army, the rest of the Potentials will be begging for their lives soon enough … if the monsters don’t get them first.”
My fingers curled into fists. So Kayden was building an army, but what for? To take on the monster or to make others submit to him? It would be so like that stupid beef cake to act like this was all one big game.
I bit my lip as I considered this information. If he had that many recruits, it must mean he’d found somewhere decent to shack up in, not to mention supplies. He’d have his cronies do all the work, sure, but if he really was planning on attacking anyone, they’d need weapons, food, and water. Maybe even meds.
I tried to overhear the rest of their conversation, but they’d turned their heads, and I swore under my breath.
An idea formed, and I grinned as I turned around to Zane, who apparently had been staring at my ass while I’d been on my knees.
“Change of plan,” I said excitedly. “I say we have a little fun before we head back.”
His eyes lit up. “We’re going to Kaydikins’s lair?” he asked hopefully.
“Yep. We’ve got new prey to track.”
He fist-pumped, whooping silently as we crept as quietly as possible through the reeds. The girls were up ahead, splashing and talking loudly as they traipsed through the marsh. It was a wonder they hadn’t called the whole horde of creatures down on us.
After tailing them for a while, they disappeared beyond a tree line and we slipped behind the trunks as we followed them cautiously. We didn’t have to try hard—they didn’t look back or check their surroundings once. They’d make useless guards, and the ditzes probably had no idea how to protect themselves if something attacked.
Turns out, they were good at leading enemies to their base. I gaped as a square tower popped into view where the trees formed around it. The stone was weather-worn but sturdy as the building loomed up several floors. There were a few Potentials keeping watch on the rampart on the top level, as well as a few huddled in pockets outside.
Kayden was nowhere to be seen, and my devious little heart pumped in excitement as I spotted supplies everywhere. Weapons, food stores, items to cook with and drink from and—my excitement surged—a med kit.
Holy shit. It was like a supermarket for survivors, except I had no plans of buying today. This was a robbery, and Zane and I would be adding to cart.
I looked at my beautiful blond sea monster with a raised brow, and the dark smile he sent back had my toes curling. Oh yes, now this was what I called payback.
“How about you create the diversion and I’ll nab the goods?” I purred, gesturing for the sack.
“I thought you’d never ask,” he replied, his ass wiggling with excitement as he handed it to me.
I grinned. “Meet me back at the hut within the hour. And Zane?”
He turned his head, looking breathtaking as a beam of sunlight gilded his face. “Yeah?”
I kissed his cheek, sliding my hand against his junk and giggling as he stiffened beneath my touch. “Don’t get caught.”
His eyes lit with the thrill of the game, and a contented sound spilled from deep within his throat as he gripped my ass and tugged me towards him.
“And miss out on the real prize?” he said against my lips, his fingers curling down so that they slid over my pussy. I moaned breathily against him, excited by the promise of his hands and the hunt we were about to begin. “You can tease me as long as you like, Starfish, but when I have you, you’ll be riding my wave so hard you’ll never turn back.”
I laughed breathily as I moved my hips, loving the friction of my jumpsuit shifting beneath his hand and kinda digging the weird way he spoke.
Then he was gone, and I forced myself to ignore the thrumming between my legs and focus on my mission. Most of the Potentials outside were rationing supplies, so it would be an easy hit provided Zane did his job well and everyone scattered like I hoped. That med kit was calling my name, and I licked my lips hungrily as I kept it in my sights.
A few minutes later, Zane ran out of the woods butt naked, one hand cupping his junk as he streaked towards the tower, roaring. “Kayden the boulder, Kayden the thick, had a remarkably tiny prick. He mounted his steeds and tried to ride, but it’s hard to have sex when you’re one inch wide.”
I gaped, trying to stifle my laugh at the ridiculous song. Someone—presumably, Kayden—roared from inside the tower and the next minute everyone was swarming after Zane who disappeared promptly into the trees.
Bingo. I lunged, speeding towards the supplies like a dragon towards gold, and I grinned like a madwoman as I shoved anything and everything into the bag, starting with the prize med kit. Weapons, canteens, a pot, food rations, even food from civilised society … I took everything I could carry.
At last I spotted some chocolate, and I just about bellowed my triumph. You’re coming home with me.
When I heard some of the Potentials returning, I dashed back to the cover of the trees and waited, ever a glutton for a good prank. Everyone was grumbling and out of breath, and I smiled gleefully.Zane you sly seadog, you did it.
And then came the words I’d been aching to hear.
