“Janet will be taking care of you tonight, and my name is Kyle. Enjoy your meal.”

Jonah detected Kyle’s interest in the two of them, part curiosity and part desire. He supposed he’d better get used to it, as they were sure to attract attention wherever they went. He looked up to see a sparkle in RJ’s eyes.

“What?”

“Nothing. I’m going to enjoy supper with the most attractive man I’ve ever met. It makes me happy.”

On cue, Jonah turned red and swatted at him.

“Stop! You’re already spoiling me too much. I’m going to get a big head.”

Jonah realized his double entendre too late, and it was RJ’s turn to be embarrassed as he pointedly looked down at his lap.

“That makes two of us.”

They laughed and opened their menus. For a little while, at least, they’d have the distraction of eating and conversation in a public place. Later, well, who knew what might happen?

BOTH MEN RELAXED ASthe meal progressed, asking and answering questions. They spoke of current events, college, and how they each managed to end up near Gladstone. When it came to discussing popular culture, Jonah felt totally out of place. His answers were either short, vague, or non-existent because he had nothing to contribute.

He couldn’t tell RJ that shifters weren’t interested in most of those things, and therefore he hadn’t seen The Justice League, didn’t know who Taylor Swift was, had never been dancing, gone on vacation, or posted anything on Facebook. RJ must have noticed his discomfort.

“It’s OK. Let’s figure out what we have in common and talk about that instead.”

Jonah wanted to get up and kiss the daylights out of RJ, but the arrival of their dessert stopped him in time. They’d both chosen the double chocolate cheesecake when Janet listed it as an option, arriving at the table on one plate with two forks. She gave them a saucy wink and recommended sitting closer for dessert.

Finding the suggestion to their liking, they scooted together to bridge the gap and picked up their forks. Until now, they hadn’t noticed Jonah was right-handed and RJ left-handed. Elbow met elbow as they lifted the first bites, resulting in more laughter and an exchange of chairs. With Jonah now sitting to RJ’s right, they could eat without knocking the delicious dessert to the floor.

Entranced by RJ’s scent and proximity, Jonah watched the man’s plush mouth as he ate. He wanted desperately to taste those lips and investigate with his tongue. Remembering they were in public, Jonah settled for feeding RJ a bite from his fork. He hesitated briefly and then offered one in return. All too soon, the cheesecake disappeared, and they were left staring into each other’s eyes. Eyes full of heat, promise, and desire.

Janet returned with the check, startling them out of their lust-induced fog. She laid it on the table and then leaned in to share a whispered comment.

“You two make a wonderful couple. How long have you been together?”

RJ sheepishly answered for them.

“Uhhh, this is our first date.”

Janet’s eyebrows took a hike north.

“Oh honey, you have some fun days ahead, I can tell. Thanks for dining with us, and I’ll look forward to serving you the next time you come back. Now, you boys better skedaddle before I have to hose you down with a fire extinguisher!”
