“I meant the wolves, and you know it!”
RJ kissed him and then reached down to hand Jonah his underwear and shorts.
“It was wonderful, Jo. Would they have let you hunt with them, too?”
Jonah talked while he dressed.
“Oh, yes! Once in a while, we even include them in our pack runs and help them take down a deer. Our wolves love the hunt as much as they do, but since they need the food, we let them have the kill.”
Once Jonah finished dressing, he resumed their hike in a different direction, following Black George Creek as it meandered towards the bay. Before long, they came to a section where the water spilled over a succession of rocky ledges, creating a series of mini waterfalls. Even in the fading light, RJ clearly saw the picturesque scene—a hidden gem he’d never have known to look for on his own.
Hand in hand, Jonah led him across the creek on dry stepping stones until they reached a rock big enough for two, near the base of the last fall. Water gurgled merrily, splishing and splashing its way around them on all sides in a soothing, intimate chorus of natural sound. RJ leaned in to nuzzle his mate’s neck, inhaling a bouquet of scents: Jonah, wolf, forest, water. The combination made him dizzy with desire, which included sex but went way beyond the physical.
Jonah reveled in the shifter-like gesture, baring his neck for RJ to scent. Someday, when his enhanced senses kicked in, the fragrance would reveal a banquet table of information—far more than his mate could detect now. Even so, Jonah’s wolf yipped in approval, urging him to claim the human as his. His to love, his to care for, his to grow old with.
Without realizing it, each man sought Robert’s advice regarding the best way to declare their love and commitment. Thus armed with a simple plan, both were waiting for the most opportune time to act on it. Nearly lost in pheromonal introspection, they simultaneously realized that the moment had arrived. RJ pulled back, hands on Jonah’s waist, and opened his mouth to speak as his mate did the same.
“Can we talk about...”
“RJ, I’ve been thinking...”
They both laughed, and RJ let Jonah go first.
“I need you toknow, not only hear me say, how much you mean to me. You are the perfect mate in every way that matters, and I will never want anyone else. Do you believe me, Rascal?”
RJ’s scent soured as he realized what Jonah referred to.
“I’m sorry, Jo. I tried to be discreet and not hurt your feelings. I can’t offer you children the way you want. If all I can give you is myself, then I’d like to make it official and...”
Jonah cradled RJ’s face in both hands.
“No! I don’t care about what you can give me.Youare everything, and I want to prove it by asking...”
Each stopped, eyes locked on the other with a dawning realization.
“Wait, so you want to get...”
“Would you do me the honor...”
“Are you talking about...”
“Of course I will...”
“Did you just ask me to marry you?”
“Did you say yes?”
Hearts pounding, their fumbled proposals came together at last in a unified answer.
“YES!”
They clutched one another in delighted laughter as the last rays of the sun bathed them in rosy twilight. Jonah needed more and swooped in to claim RJ’s mouth with fierce kisses as their matching erections pressed together in muted friction. Somewhere from deep inside RJ’s chest came a rumbling growl that surprised both of them, turning Jonah’s knees to jelly. Overcome by a strange compulsion, RJ yanked the collar of Jonah’s shirt aside and bit down hard on the muscle.
Some type of feedback loop sent Jonah’s libidinous reaction straight to RJ’s balls, and they both keened through a titanic orgasm. Too aroused to wonder where it came from, they ground together, gasping for air as their bodies shuddered and jerked with powerful contractions. When the tsunami released them at last, they found themselves facing one another, kneeling on the rock in near darkness. RJ managed to speak first.
“What happened, Jo? Did I hurt you?”
Breathless, Jonah answered him with hooded eyes.
